Tufts Holds Off Men’s Hockey 2-1

The Middlebury men's hockey team led 1-0 after two periods of play, but a pair of third period goals gave Tufts a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Jumbos looked to take the lead after 6:49 of action. Max Resnick skated around the goal and tried to fire a wrap-around attempt inside the left pipe, but Panther netminder Jake Horoho was alert and thwarted the effort.
  • Just three minutes later, Middlebury nearly opened the scoring. Wyatt Pastor pounced on a loose puck just below the left circle and ripped a shot that rang the left pipe and ricocheted wide.
  • At the 14:31 mark, Andrej Hromic almost put the Panthers in front as he blasted a shot from the right circle toward the top right corner, but the puck was snagged by Tufts' goaltender Peyton Durand.
  • Middlebury moved into the lead 4:46 into the middle stanza. Ryan Pineault dropped a pass to Jin Lee who collected the puck in between the circles and ripped a shot into the top left corner to make it 1-0.
  • The visitors nearly doubled their lead with 9:15 showing on the clock. Chris Garbe broke away for a one-on-one opportunity, but a great poke check by Durand stopped the forward from tapping the puck into the net.
  • The hosts looked to respond in the final minute of the second period. Resnick blasted a shot from the left dot that hit the crossbar, beforeHarrison Bazianos collected the rebound and peppered Horoho's net, but the Panther goaltender stood tall to preserve the lead.
  • The Jumbos leveled the score 4:13 into the final frame. Sam Miller fired a shot on goal that Horoho pushed aside, but the rebound fell to Bazianos at the left dot and his bid found the bottom right corner to knot the contest at 1-1.
  • Less than 40 seconds later, Tufts took the lead. Brendan Fennell backhanded a pass from behind the goal that reached Clark Bolin who skated across the crease and tapped the puck past a diving Horoho for the 2-1 advantage.
  • Just over midway through the third stanza, Pineault rifled a shot from just inside the blueline that looked destined to find the nylon, but smashed the left pipe and careened away from the net.
  • With 2:15 remaining in the contest, Horoho was forced into a tremendous save. Marek Pechr drove down the right side of the offensive zone and flipped a shot on target which was pushed aside. He collected his own rebound and tried to fire the puck into the net but Horoho sprawled across his crease to keep him off the scoresheet.
  • The Panthers pulled Horoho for the final two minutes of action, but were unable to find an equalizer, as Tufts escaped with the 2-1 win.
NOTES
  • Lee has now tallied a point in each of the last four games.
  • Pineault's assist was his fifth of the season, which is tied for the team lead.
