Panther Women Win Giant Slalom On Day One Of Colby Carnival

Mika-Anne Reha finished as the runner-up in the giant slalom on Friday afternoon.
The Middlebury women's alpine squad paced the ski teams on the opening day of the Colby Carnival, winning the giant slalom (GS) with 119 points. Dartmouth leads the way with 453.5 points, while the University of Vermont is second (402) and the Panthers round out the top-three teams (374) after one day of action.
 
ALPINE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The women's team placed three racers in the top-eight spots to claim the victory in the GS event with 119 points.
  • Mika-Anne Reha was the runner-up, finishing her two runs down the mountain in 1:46.63, just 0.11 seconds behind the winner.
  • Alexandra Cossette secured the fifth spot on the leaderboard, crossing the finish line with a combined time of 1:47.71. 
  • Emma Hall rounded out the scorers with an eighth-place showing (1:47.89).
  • The men's squad earned third place in the GS, tallying 100 points. 
  • Bradshaw Underhill led the way for the Panthers, finishing in fifth with a two-run time of 1:43.69.
  • Nicholas Unkovskoy (ninth) and Axel Bailey (10th) also scored points for Middlebury and were separated by just four one-hundredths of a second, with their two trips down the mountain totaling 1:44.19 and 1:44.23, respectively.
NORDIC HIGHLIGHTS
  • Maggie Wagner led the way for the Panthers in the 7.5K freestyle, crossing the finish line in ninth place with a time of 20:11.8.
  • Sofia Scirica was Middlebury's next finisher, posting a 19th-place effort of 20:55.5. 
  • Rounding out the scorers was Mica Bodkins, who finished three spots behind Scirica (21:08.5).
  • Pacing the Panthers was Logan Moore who skied to eighth place with a time of 17:24.1.
  • Mason Wheeler was next for Middlebury with a 12th-place showing (17:46.4), while Jack Christner crossed the finish line in  25th (18:03.9).
NOTES
  • Nina Reichhelm also scored a top-10 finish in the GS, placing ninth with a time of 1:47.92.
  • Unkovskoy's ninth-place showing was the first race of his collegiate career.
 The Panthers return to the Quarry Roads Trails (nordic) and Sugarloaf Mountain (alpine) on Saturday to conclude the Colby Carnival.
