Men’s Swimming and Diving Defeated By Bates On Senior Day

Prior to today's meet, the Panthers honored all nine seniors for their efforts to the program.
The Middlebury men's swimming and diving team fell by a 165-132 score to Bates on Sunday afternoon. Prior to the beginning of the meet, the Panthers honored seniors Ran Brown, Edwin Fan, Dominic Frerichs, Riley Griffis, Ben Merz, Alexander Oh, Christopher Pedersen, Andrew Planting and Liam Smith for their efforts to the program.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Luke McNamara earned the top spot in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:52.35, while also claiming first place in the 400 Individual Medley (4:13.67).
  • In the 500 free, Pierce Bigelow finished first, touching the wall in 4:51.50, exactly five seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer.
  • Paul Shen was the quickest to the wall in the 200 breaststroke with a clocking of 2:11.59.
  • Owen White and Liam Smith finished first and second during both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. White won with scores of 237.98 (1-meter) and 239.63 (3-meter), while Smith accumulated 234.75 and 237.63 points, respectively.
  • Middlebury secured second place in both of the relay events. In the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Samuel Hughes, Shen, Andrew Dou and Jason Chiappinelli touched the wall in 1:35.25. The group of Hughes, Chiappinelli, Pedersen and Matthew Hensel finished second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:26.04.
  • Other runner-up efforts included Griffis (100 and 200 free), Jack Undercofler (100 backstroke), Will Sonne (200 butterfly), Hughes (200 back), and Dou (100 fly).
NOTES
  • McNamara and Shen each recorded three victories over the course of the weekend.
The Panthers return to the pool next Saturday when they travel to Union (N.Y.) for a dual meet beginning at 1:00 p.m.
