The 20th-ranked Middlebury men's squash team capped its home weekend with a victory, earning a hard-fought 8-1 triumph over Bowdoin. Seven of Sunday's nine matches went four games with one other contest needing five games to decide a victor.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers jumped out to an early advantage, grabbing the first point with a four-game win by Gabe Thin at #7 (12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9).
- The Polar Bears tallied their lone point with a four-game decision atop the ladder.
- The longest result of the day came in the middle spot, as Kian Kardestuncer edged his opponent by scores of 11-8, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9 in a match that lasted an hour and six minutes.
- Alex Stimpson gave the hosts a 3-1 advantage, dropping the opening game before rebounding for a 3-1 triumph at #9 (8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 16-14).
- Will Lichstein posted a four-game victory in the second slot by score of 11-8, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7, before Theo Kogan clinched the match minutes later with an 11-4, 7-11, 11-1, 11-6 win at #4.
- The Panthers grabbed a 7-1 advantage with wins at #8 from David Zhao (11-8, 11-4, 11-9) and PK Keller at #6 (11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7).
- The third flight was the last match on the courts, as Caleb Boateng fought back after losing the first two games for an hour and four minute 8-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 win for the final 8-1 score.
NOTES
- Charlie Clifford recorded an 11-9, 11-4, 12-10 sweep in the exhibition match.
- The victories by Kardestuncer and Zhao were the seventh in a row for both Panthers.
- With the win, the Panthers earned the 200th victory in the program's history (200-136).
- The programs played for the 23rd time with Middlebury holding an 18-5 advantage, having won 17 of the last 18 meetings.
Following a busy stretch with three matches in as many days, the Panthers have nearly a week off before returning to action on Saturday when they host Williams at 3:00 p.m.
