#6 Women’s Hockey Skates To 1-1 Tie With #9 Colby

The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 with #9 Colby to open the NESCAC weekend set with the Mules. Tonight's result was the first tie in the all-time series history between the two programs.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Colby had the first chance of the game at the 9:15 mark. Sophia Kennedy skated into the offensive zone with a one-on-one opportunity, but netminder Sophia Merageas stopped her shot to keep the contest scoreless.
  • The Panthers struck first with 6:43 showing on the clock. Julia Johnson cleared the puck up the ice to Jordan Hower who tracked it down. Hower raced toward the goal before burying her close-range effort into the bottom-right corner for a 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury opened the second period on the front foot. After 1:54 of action, Kate Flynn rifled a low shot that was saved by the right pad of Mule netminder Grace Caligiuri, but nearly trickled across the goalline before it was covered up.
  • Colby responded with multiple chances over the next three minutes. Courtney Schumacher drove down the right side of the zone and fired a shot toward the upper-right corner that was denied by Merageas.
  • At the 8:43 mark, Meg Rittenhouse danced past multiple defenders in the center of the zone and ripped a shot on target, but Merageas was equal to it to thwart the bid.
  • The Panthers nearly doubled their lead at the 16:32 mark. Rachel Neyman collected a loose puck and skated in on the goal. Her backhanded effort looked destined to find the twine, but Caligiuri denied her with an impressive butterfly save.
  • The Mules knotted the score at 1-1 with 2:15 left in the second stanza. Breanna Studley broke away down the right side of the ice and roofed her shot over the left shoulder of Merageas and into the upper corner.
  • Just over a minute later, Colby nearly took the lead. Beth Stinson controlled a pass in the Middlebury crease and tried to sneak her shot home, but Merageas sprawled to deny the bid and keep the score at 1-1 heading into the final period of play.
  • The Panthers earned a power play at the 6:46 mark of the third stanza, but it was the Mules who nearly capitalized just 12 seconds later as Audrey Shirer's attempt stung the pipe before careening wide.
  • The Mules peppered the Panther net in the final four minutes of regulation, forcing Merageas into six saves. With 1:30 remaining, Rittenhouse fired a shot from the left side that rang the crossbar but did not find the back of the net, as the two teams headed to overtime.
  • Middlebury's best chance of the extra five-minute period came after 1:33 when Raia Schluter narrowly missed ending the contest as she struck the pipe.
  • Colby owned the final 2:08 of play, blasting seven shots on frame, but Merageas thwarted all seven to bring the final score to 1-1.
NOTES
  • Merageas was spectacular in her return to the ice, making a career-best 35 saves.
  • Hower's goal was her second of the season.
  • Middlebury and Colby faced off for the 64th time in the all-time series with the Panthers holding a 51-12-1 advantage. Middlebury has won the last six of the last seven meetings.
The Panthers and the Mules conclude the weekend series on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
