Women’s Soccer Grounds Cardinals 9-0 In Season Opener

The Middlebury women's soccer team kicked off its season with a 9-0 home victory over Plattsburgh State. The Panther goal output marks the most tallies scored since the 2013 campaign when the program notched a 10-0 triumph against Norwich.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury grabbed a 1-0 lead when Emma Binks made a quick touch to her left, burying a shot from just outside the 18-yard box with 13:01 elapsed.
  • The Panthers increased their advantage to a pair (2-0) following a Cardinal foul inside the penalty area. Abby Ward stepped to the dot, blasting the ball into the lower-left corner with 27:05 gone in the stanza.
  • Just over a minute later, Joely Virzi pushed the lead to 3-0, one-touching a ball on the far post following a cross from the right side by Binks.
  • Ward tallied her second goal of the half with 10:24 left before the break, tapping in a pass from Virzi on the left side for a 4-0 halftime advantage.
  • Middlebury found the back of the Plattsburgh State net five times in the second stanza, including a pair of markers by Chloe Swindle in the 74th and 83rd minutes, respectively.
  • Olivia O'Reilly left-footed a bouncing rebound in front of the Cardinal net at the 85:06 mark for her first goal as a Panther and the final 9-0 tally.
