Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Panthers Set Program Record With 11-1 Victory Over Mount Saint Mary

The Middlebury men's soccer team eased past Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) 11-1 on Tuesday in its season opener. The Panthers set a program record for most goals scored in a game, breaking the previous mark of 10 that was achieved twice (1976 and 2015).

HIGHLIGHTS
  • With just under three minutes expired, Jordan Saint-Louis drew a foul just inside the right side of the box to earn a penalty kick. Saint-Louis stepped up to the dot and buried the ball in the bottom-left corner for the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury struck again with 11:04 elapsed. Saint-Louis lifted a cross from the left side that sent goalie Caesar Martinez barreling off his line, but Gavin Randolph was there to one-time the feed into the net for the 2-0 lead.
  • Owen Davis headed a throw-in from the left side, before Luke Madden used his head to redirect the ball into the goal, extending the advantage to 3-0 with 14:02 expired.
  • The Knights looked to get on the scoreboard at the 16:20 mark, but Liam Hughes' header attempt from the top of the 18 was thwarted by goaltender Ryan Grady.
  • Madden tallied his second marker of the game nearly 20 minutes in. The ball ping-ponged around the box after a corner kick before Madden flicked it into the back of the net to make it 4-0.
  • Mount Saint Mary broke through with just over two minutes left in the half. Peter Rameriz ran on to a through ball sent up the middle by Marco Mazzarelli, before making a move around Grady to cut the deficit down to three (4-1) at the break.
  • Out of the intermission, Kyle Nilsson dribbled the ball from the corner down the end line, before feeding Owen Davis who chipped the ball over the Knights' goalie to increase the lead to 5-1.
  • An initial shot by Saint-Louis was denied by Martinez, but Will Sawin was there to tap in the rebound at the 58:21 mark to make it 6-1.
  • Middlebury had a three-minute scoring frenzy beginning in the 68th minute, highlighted by a pair of assists and a marker by Alem Muris Hadzic.
  • Hugo Horwitz found the back of the net with 8:32 remaining, before Jay Hoke converted a penalty kick in the waning minutes for the 11-1 decision.

NOTES
  • Davis, Hoke, Horwitz and Sawin each tallied their first career goals in their debuts.
  • Nilsson tied the program's single-game record with his three helpers.
  • The Panthers extended their season-opener unbeaten streak to nine (7-0-2) with the win.
