Middlebury Announces 2023 Hall of Fame Induction Class

The 2023 Middlebury Hall of Fame.
Middlebury Athletics is excited to announce eight members for the 2023 Hall of Fame. The ninth class represents 10 sports and includes Hedda Berntsen '99, Nathan Edmunds '06, Leslie Edwards '01, Jessa Hoffman '13, Edie MacAusland Mabrey '76, Emily Quizon '06, David Saward, and Brian Waldron '06.

Hedda Berntsen '99 - Alpine Skiing, Soccer, Track & Field
Hedda Berntsen, a member of the Class of 1999, was a standout alpine skier, soccer player, and track and field athlete who went on to compete on the world stage.
 
Berntsen was a three-time All-American on the alpine ski team, helping the squad finish as the EISA runner-up and place sixth at the NCAA Championship in 1996. In the fall of 1997, Berntsen led the women's soccer team with 27 points and a school record 11 goals, while earning All-New England and NESCAC All-Star laurels. In the spring of 1998, Berntsen was part of the NESCAC Championship 4x100-meter relay team, she and earned All-New England and All-ECAC honors. Berntsen was also a member of the record-setting 4x400 relay that spring.
 
While on leave from college to pursue her Olympic dreams, Berntsen was the 1997 Telemark Classic World Champion, earned bronze in the slalom at the 2001 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, and competed in alpine skiing at the 2002 Olympics. She returned to Middlebury to complete her degree in 2003.
 
Bernsten earned silver in the ski cross at the 2008 and 2012 World X Games, and at the 2010 Olympics.
 
She earned her PhD in sports psychology in 2019.
 
Nathan Edmunds '06 - Tennis
Nathan Edmunds, a member of the Class of 2006, excelled in tennis.
 
Edmunds was a four-time All-American, earning the award three straight years in singles and once in doubles. He was a three-time All-NESCAC First Team honoree in singles and was named the 2004 NESCAC Player of the Year. Edmunds was a 2005 ITA Cup Singles semifinalist and a 2006 NCAA Singles semifinalist.
 
He helped Middlebury capture the program's first national championship in 2004, while also leading the team to NCAA runner-up finishes in 2005 and 2006. Edmunds was a part of three NESCAC Championships during his time as a player.
 
In 2006, Edmunds won the prestigious ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship, presented annually to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular, and tennis achievements.
 
During his stint as an assistant coach at Middlebury, Edmunds helped guide the team to a NESCAC Championship and a third-place finish at NCAAs. 
 
Leslie Edwards '01 - Volleyball
Leslie Edwards, a member of the Class of 2001, was an exceptional volleyball player.
 
Edwards was named the 2000 NESCAC Player of the Year, while garnering all-conference laurels in three of her four seasons. She was twice named an AVCA All-New England awardee while also being tabbed to the NEWVA All-New England Team on two occasions.
 
Edwards still holds single-season records in kills (429), solo blocks (85), and points (553). She also owns career program marks in points (1,797), kills (1,331), total blocks (443), sets played (440), and solo blocks (255). 
 
In 1997, Edwards helped the team set a record for most service aces (266) and most solo blocks (180) in a season. The following year, she propelled the team to the most wins in program history (27), the highest winning percentage (.867), and a NESCAC Championship. Edwards helped the team make a pair of ECAC Tournament appearances during those seasons. 
 
Edwards was named to the 2000 Verizon Academic All-America Volleyball District I First Team in her senior year and was also a member of the NESCAC All-Academic squad. 
 
Jessa Hoffman '13 - Softball
Jessa Hoffman, a member of the Class of 2013, was a game-changing softball player.
 
Hoffman was a four-time All-NESCAC selection and was named to the NFCA All-New England Region squad twice. She helped lead Middlebury to its first NESCAC Championship in 2011 and was named the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2012. 
 
In her senior season, Hoffman was tabbed an NFCA Scholar Athlete and a CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree. 
 
Hoffman left her mark on the program, owning 12 school records at the time of her graduation. She holds single-season marks in most games played (38), at-bats (129), hits (57), runs scored (45), and triples (seven). She also owns career records in assists (300), games played (142), at-bats (465), hits (188), runs scored (143), and triples (25). Hoffman is also tied for most hits in a game with five.
 
In 2011, Hoffman was hit by pitch on 17 occasions, which ranked fifth in the country at the time of her graduation. 
 
Edie MacAusland Mabrey '76 - Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Alpine Skiing, Ice Hockey
Edie MacAusland Mabrey, a member of the Class of 1976, was a standout in field hockey, while also competing in alpine skiing, ice hockey, and lacrosse throughout her four years. 
 
MacAusland helped the field hockey squad record three straight undefeated campaigns. A captain in her senior season, MacAusland was named the team's most valuable player, while also being tabbed to the Division A team for the second consecutive year. MacAusland was also on the alpine ski and lacrosse teams for three seasons, and in her senior year played ice hockey.
 
A high honor graduate, MacAusland was the cowinner of the Mary Dunning Thwing Award for creative writing and earned the "Moose" Provoncha Award for best athlete. 
 
MacAusland was an assistant in the Middlebury Admissions Office the year after graduating while also serving as an assistant field hockey coach during that time. MacAusland trained with the USA Field Hockey team from 1977 to 1980 leading up to the Olympics. 
 
In 1979, she became the head field hockey and assistant tennis coach at Harvard, holding those positions until 1984. MacAusland later served as an assistant women's lacrosse coach for three years, helping the squad capture the 1990 NCAA title. 
 
Emily Quizon '06 - Ice Hockey
Emily Quizon, a member of the Class of 2006, helped women's ice hockey achieve national prominence in the early 2000s. 
 
Quizon was the 2006 ACHA Division III Player of the Year and was a three-time All-American. She was tabbed the NESCAC Player of the Year twice and earned All-NESCAC First Team honors on three occasions.
 
A captain in her senior year, she helped Middlebury set a program record 27 wins, which is still tied for the most in history. Quizon also helped the program set a mark with a 24-game winning streak, a record that stood for 16 years. She led the squad to three straight NCAA titles (2004, 2005, 2006) and three NESCAC Championships (2003, 2005, 2006), while finishing as conference runner-up in 2004. 
 
Quizon is tied for second in single-season assists (38) and third in single-season points (58), which both still rank in the all-time top-10 spots in Division III. On the career record list, Quizon is third in assists (107) and fifth in points (171). 
 
David Saward - Coach and Administrator
David Saward spent 33 years as a coach and administrator at Middlebury. He was a respected leader at the College, in the NESCAC, and at the national level throughout his decades of service. 
 
He was the head men's soccer coach for 33 seasons, owning the most wins in program history with a 359-126-59 record. Saward led the team to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by the program's first-ever NCAA title in 2007. His teams also captured two ECAC titles (1986, 1999) and three NESCAC Championships (2000, 2007, 2010). Saward coached 19 different All-Americans during his tenure.
 
Saward was named the National Coach of the Year in 2007, the New England Coach of the Year on six occasions, and the NESCAC Coach of the Year twice. He was lauded with the 2009 NSCAA Mike Berticelli Excellence in Coaching Education Award and was inducted into the Vermont Soccer Hall of Fame in 2018.
 
When Saward arrived at Middlebury, he was the head women's squash coach and served in that role for 21 years. During that time, the program won nearly 200 matches and captured the 1995 Howe "C" Cup and two Walker Cups (2004, 2005). Saward was a three-time recipient of the Clarence C. Chaffee Award. 
 
Brian Waldron '06 - Tennis
Brian Waldron, a member of the Class of 2006, helped put men's tennis on the map. 
 
Waldron, the 2006 NESCAC Player of the Year, was a three-time All-American in singles. He was tabbed to the All-NESCAC First Team three times in singles while also earning the honor in doubles in his senior year.  
 
In 2004, Waldron was the ITA Cup Singles finalist, following that up with finishing as the NCAA Singles runner-up in 2006.
 
He helped Middlebury capture the program's first national championship in 2004, while also leading the team to NCAA runner-up finishes in 2005 and 2006. Waldron was a part of three NESCAC Championships during his time as a player.
 
Waldron capped his career by being tabbed the ITA Senior Player of the Year in 2006.

The Panthers will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 4. Information about the in-person celebration and tickets will be shared at a later date.
 
The Middlebury Athletics Hall of Fame is located in the Peterson Family Athletics Complex. The Hall of Fame inducted its first class in January 2015, in conjunction with the opening of Virtue Field House, and will induct up to 10 individuals a year. To be eligible, former student-athletes who are nominated for consideration must be at least 10 years removed from their final year of collegiate competition. Coaches, administrators, and staff must have served with distinction and be a minimum of five years removed from their employment with the College in order to receive consideration. Pre- and post-Middlebury accomplishments can factor into a nominee's candidacy as long as the accomplishments fall within the sphere of athletic achievement and bear some connection to the nominee's athletic career at Middlebury.
