Eighth-seeded
Sahana Raman of the Middlebury women's tennis team wrapped up play in the NCAA Singles Championship on Saturday morning. The Panther earned a pair of straight-set victories to open the tournament, but fell 6-1, 6-2 to third-seeded Nika Vesely of Wesleyan in the quarterfinal round.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The opening game of the first set went to deuce, but Raman earned match point with strong serving to take a 1-0 edge.
- Vesely responded with three-consecutive victories to take a 3-1 advantage.
- Only one point separated the next three games, but Vesely was able to secure each of them to win the opening set 6-1.
- Trailing 4-0 in the second frame, Raman was victorious in two-straight games, dropping only one point in each to cut the deficit in half (4-2).
- The late surge was not enough as Vesely was able to claim the final pair of games for the 6-2 victory.
NOTES
- Raman finished the season with a 17-7 overall singles record, and a 45-12 career mark.
- The Panther also had a perfect 12-0 record in the top spot of doubles this season with partner Amy Delman.
- This marked the fourth time the athletes played each other this year. Raman claimed a 7-5, 2-6, 12-10 victory in the fall over Vesely, but the Cardinal won the regular-season (6-4, 6-4) and NESCAC Championship (6-2, 6-4) bouts.
- This was the first appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship for Raman, owning a 2-1 mark.
