#5 Men’s Lacrosse Falls to #3 RIT In NCAA Quarterfinal

The fifth-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team fell to third-ranked RIT 16-6 in NCAA Quarterfinal action on Saturday evening. The Panthers made their 13th appearance in the quarterfinals and first since 2010, finishing the season with an 18-3 overall mark.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Tigers opened the scoring after 45 seconds, as Luke Pilcher found the top right corner on a long-range effort to make it 1-0. 
  • Cooper DeMallie answered for the Panthers at the 12:51 mark. The first year cut inside his defender and fired a left-handed shot past Tiger goalie Will Sterrett to level the contest at 1-1.
  • RIT controlled the remainder of the first quarter, rattling off five unanswered goals to take a 6-1 advantage. 
  • In the second stanza, Luke Simpson cut the deficit to four (6-2) when he carried the ball the length of the field, faking out multiple defenders, before slipping the ball into the net at the 11:44 mark. 
  • Goals from Seth Grottenthaler and Joe Camp gave the Tigers an 8-2 edge with 5:31 left in the half, but DeMallie tallied his second marker of the game to trim the RIT lead to five (8-3).
  • The Tigers closed the half with two more goals to take a 10-3 lead into the intermission.
  • RIT tallied two markers after 3:33 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 12-3.
  • Middlebury responded with a goal at the 5:37 mark when William Ryan found the back of the net following a great feed from Billy Curtis to make it 12-4.
  • Following a Tigers' goal, Patrick Jamin scooped up a groundball in midfield and raced downfield before ripping a shot into the top left corner the lead down to 13-5.
  • Tom Conley added another tally to begin the fourth quarter, but RIT closed out the game with three unanswered goals to bring the final score to 16-6.
NOTES
  • This was the third meeting in the NCAA Tournament between the two programs with the Panthers holding a 2-1 edge.
