McGarrity Shines As Men’s Golf Opens NCAA Championships

Sean McGarrity finished the opening round with a three-under-par 69 to tie for seventh.
The Middlebury men's golf team competed on the opening day of the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers finished the first round in a tie for 25th place with a score of 307. Day one of the tournament followed a shotgun start format.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sean McGarrity led the squad during the first round, firing a three-under-par 69 and finishing in a tie for seventh, two shots behind the leader. McGarrity tallied six birdies on the day, including four on the front nine holes to move into the top 10.
  • Colin McCaigue was next for Middlebury finishing the day with a 76. McCaigue opened his round with an eagle on the par-four 13th hole and recorded birdies on both of the par-fives.
  • Hogan Beazley and Anthony King each finished their opening rounds with a score of 81. Beazley closed his day by carding a three on the par-four 13th hole to give him three birdies on the day, while King birdied the eighth and 13th holes in his first round. 
  • Rounding out the scorers for the Panthers was Charlie Schulman, who finished just one shot behind Beazley and King (82). 
NOTES
  • McGarrity's six birdies was the third most by an individual on the opening day of competition.
  • McCaigue was one of just 13 players to eagle a hole in today's action.
  • After one round, St. John's (Minn.) leads the field, finishing the day with a four-under-par 284.
  • Individually, Bobby Beaubien of Illinois Wesleyan and Brian Hanson of Emory each sit in a tie for first place with a five-under-par 67.
The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow for the second round of the NCAA Tournament teeing off at 10:00 a.m.
