#5 Men’s Lacrosse Slips Past St. Mary’s In NCAA Tournament Action

The fifth-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team slipped past St. Mary's (Md.) 10-9 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Panthers move on to face the winner of Union (N.Y.) and Western New England at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Finn Muldoon opened the scoring with 2:09 elapsed, firing a left handed shot past Seahawk goalie Ben Robertson to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Middlebury piled on three more goals to take a 4-0 advantage at the 11:51 mark. Russell Thorndike began the run with a shot that found the top-left corner. Garrett Hawthorne won the ensuing faceoff and sprinted 50 yards before slotting the ball into the net, and Jake Peluso capped the run with a fine finish.
  • Saint Mary's halved the deficit (4-2), scoring twice over the next 4:18. Cal Wilcox slipped the ball past Hayden Kern from close-range as the shot clock was nearly expired before PJ Fenchek found the back of the net with a turnaround shot.
  • At the 5:29 mark, the Seahawks pulled to within one (4-3) on a goal from Nate Hochrein. 
  • Cooper DeMallie restored the Panthers' two goal edge (5-3) with 4:32 remaining, but markers from Drew Goldschneider and Johnny McGrain leveled the score at 5-5 after one quarter of play.
  • Thorndike and McGrain each tallied a goal over the first 9:07 of the second quarter to bring the score 6-6.
  • Middlebury ended the first half strong, as William Ryan and Thorndike each struck with less than two minutes to go to give the Panthers an 8-6 advantage heading into the halftime break.
  • Middlebury scored the lone goal of the third quarter. With 2:48 to go, Ryan beat his defender and drove to the net before flicking the ball past Robertson for a 9-6 lead.
  • Ryan picked up where he left off, giving the Panthers a four-goal edge (10-6) with 5:44 elapsed in the final stanza.
  • Saint Mary's mounted a late comeback, rattling off three-straight tallies with just under three minutes, closing to within one (10-9) with 5:48 left in the contest. Middlebury's defense held tough over the final minutes of the contest, keeping the Seahawks at bay to secure the 10-9 victory.
NOTES
  • This was the first matchup in history between Middlebury and Saint Mary's (Md.).
  • Kern was superb in the Panther goal, stopping 14 shots. This marked the 11th time this season that the goalie has made double-digit saves in a game.
  • With the victory, Middlebury moves to 34-14 all time in NCAA Tournament play.
