Trio Of First Place Finishes Highlight Amherst Spring Fling

Samuel Maxwell was victorious in the discus throw during today's meet.
The Middlebury men's track and field team competed at the Amherst Spring Fling on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers saw three individuals claim victories at the meet.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Aidan Castanon opened the day with a victory in the 100-meter dash crossing the finish line in 10.83. Richard Clark finished in fifth place, just .2 seconds behind Castanon.
  • In the high jump, Tristan Joseph won in his first event of the year. The rookie claimed the top spot with a height of 1.90m.
  • Samuel Maxwell was victorious in the discus throw with a toss of 41.54m. Dan Urchuk placed third, with a mark of 38.27, while Logan Cosgrove was fifth with a throw of 37.75m.
  • Dave Filias was the runner-up in the hammer throw with a heave of 51.48m which was 4.3m further than the third place finisher. James Hetherington and Maxwell finished fourth and fifth with throws of 45.20m and 45.11m, respectively.
  • In the shot put, Filias continued his strong day, finishing third with a distance of 13.14m. Cosgrove and Urchuk also scored for Middlebury. Cosgrove placed fifth (12.71m) while Urchuk was seventh (12.41m).
  • In the 400 hurdles, Peter Hansen earned a second place finish. The senior finished with a time of 55.22.
  • The team of Xander Swann, Clark, Castanon, and Aaron Tobias finished second in the 4x100, stopping the clock at 42.15, one-tenth of a second behind the winner.
  • Jefferson Hill and Quinn Kennedy placed fourth and fifth in the 110 hurdles. Hill crossed the finish line in 15.54, while Kennedy was just .03 behind.
  • The quartet of Kennedy, Colin Breen, Isaiah Izzo Lizardi and Zachary Utz took home third place in the 4x400 relay, crossing the finish line in 3:24.86. 
  • In the 5,000, Max Cluss finished in third, stopping the clock at 14:45.64. Ziggy Goddard was two spots behind with a time of 14:59.48.
  • A trio of Panthers earned top-10 finishes in the 400. Luke Hayes placed fourth (51.19), while Breen (51.26) and Lizardi (51.41) were just behind in fifth and sixth, respectively.
  • Henry Ericson and Walker Coleman claimed fourth place in their respective field events. Ericson cleared the bar at 4.00m in the high jump, while Coleman had a leap of 6.59m in the long jump.
  • Lucas Donavan-Lafuente closed the meet with a fourth-place showing in the javelin. The captain finished with a throw of 44.00m.

  • During the meet, multiple Panthers set new personal-bests, including Nadji Ngbokoli (100 & 200), Sam McGarrahan (100), Swann (200), Josiah Durfee (200), Lizardi (400), Cluss (5,000), Coleman (long jump), Kennedy (long jump), Ethan Klosseck (triple jump), Maxwell (discus & hammer), James Flaumenhaft (discus) and Hetherington (hammer).   
The Panthers will take part in two meets next weekend. The squad will travel to Princeton on April 14-15 for the Larry Ellis Invitational before traveling to Smith for the Carla Coffey Invitational on Saturday, April 15.
