#6 Men’s Lacrosse Downs #15 Wesleyan 19-15

The sixth-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team utilized a dominant surge in the second quarter to down #15 Wesleyan 19-15 on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers tallied six unanswered goals over a 7:29 span to help earn the victory. Middlebury moves to 9-1 on the year and 6-1 in conference play.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cardinals opened the scoring after just 48 seconds of play on a long-ranged effort from C.K. Giancola.
  • Middlebury responded with three unanswered tallies. Russell Thorndike got the Panthers going at the 10:55 mark, tucking his shot inside the left post. William Ryan added to the lead 1:02 later, bouncing a shot from the doorstep into the bottom left corner. With 2:51 remaining in the first, Billy Curtis made the score 3-1. The attacker received a pass from Thorndike before faking out the goalie and slipping the ball into the back of the net.
  • Both teams traded tallies with under a minute to go. Wesleyan pulled within one (3-2) on a solo goal from D.J. Dixon, before Logan White restored the Panthers' two-goal lead (4-2), firing a left-handed shot into the top left corner with seven seconds left. 
  • Dixon began the second stanza by taking the ball 50 yards on his own and beating Middlebury goal Hayden Kern to make the score 4-3 after only 20 seconds. 
  • The Panthers answered at the 13:12 mark. Tom Conley made a move around his defender and charged into the offensive zone flipping a shot into the top corner to bring the score to 5-3.
  • The Cardinals tied the contest at 5-5 following goals from Ben Burns and Matt Gill with 4:37 elapsed in the second quarter. 
  • Middlebury rattled off six straight goals over the next 7:29 to pull ahead for good. Drew Dummer began the run with a long-pole goal at the 10:10 mark. Thorndike added three markers, while Conley and Finn Muldoon each got in on the action to give the Panthers an 11-5 advantage.
  • Wesleyan's Dixon and Pat Doherty scored two quick goals with under two minutes to go, making it 11-7.
  • Middlebury would not be denied a six goal lead at the half. Ryan found an onrushing Luke Simpson at the back post with 17 seconds to go to make it 12-7, before Conley found nylon with 0.3 seconds left on the clock to send the Panthers into the break with a 13-7 advantage. 
  • At the 13:08 mark in the third quarter, Patrick Jamin increased the Middlebury edge to 14-7 with a blistering shot that hit the top right corner. Cooper DeMallie added a goal of his own with 5:01 elapsed to extend the lead to eight (15-7).
  • From there, the two sides each netted a pair of goals over the remainder of the third quarter to bring the score to 17-9.
  • White opened the final stanza by blasting a shot from distance into the top left corner to extend the lead to nine (18-9).
  • The Cardinals closed the gap to five (18-13) by tallying four unanswered goals over a 3:09 span. 
  • DeMallie pushed the Panther advantage back to six (19-13) at the 6:11 mark. Wesleyan responded with two goals, but it was not enough as Middlebury held on for the 19-15 victory.
NOTES
  • The Panthers caused 12 turnovers in today's contest, which has proved to be the difference this season. Middlebury has now caused 10 turnovers or more on five occasions this year.
  • The Panthers have now squared off with a ranked opponent on five occasions this season. Middlebury has won four of those matches.
  • The Panthers and the Cardinals met for the 56th time on Saturday. With the win, Middlebury holds a slight 29-26-1 edge in the series.
Middlebury travels to Canton, New York on Wednesday, April 12, to take on St. Lawrence in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
