Filias & Hansen Crowned NESCAC Champions, Team Finishes Fourth At Conference Championship

The Middlebury men's track and field team finished fourth with 94.5 points at the NESCAC Championships on Saturday hosted by Connecticut College. Tufts claimed the conference crown with 171 points, while Williams (126) and Amherst (114.5) rounded out the top three. The Panthers were led by Dave Filias and Peter Hansen who each earned individual conference crowns. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Filias was named the NESCAC Champion in the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 58.84m.
  • Hansen was victorious in the 400-meter hurdles, stopping the clock in 53.25 to earn the event title. Xander Swann finished four spots back with a time of 55.80.
  • The 4x800 relay team of Max Cluss, Zach Utz, Johnny LaFortune and Lachlan Bishop raced to a second-place finish, clocking in at 7:54.56.
  • Dan Urchuk was the runner-up in the discus, launching the implement 42.86m. Logan Cosgrove finished in sixth with a toss of 40.47m.
  • Four Panthers placed in the top-10 in the 3,000 steeplechase. Ziggy Goddard earned All-NESCAC accolades, finishing third to lead Middlebury with a time of 9:30.09. Ryan Devine claimed fifth, crossing the finish line in 9:36.71, while Will Lavey (seventh) and Owen Johnson (eighth) rounded out the Panther finishers. 
  • In the 10,000, Alec Gironda earned all-conference honors, finishing third with a time of 31:02.65.
  • The 4x400 team of Hansen, Colin Breen, Luke Hayes and Isaiah Izzo Lizardi rounded out Middlebury's All-NESCAC honorees. The quartet earned a third-place finish, crossing the finish line in 3:22.47.
  • In the high jump, the Panthers posted a pair of top-10 finishes. Sam McGarrahan placed fifth with a mark of 1.90m that he achieved on his second jump, while Tristan Joseph was seventh, clearing the same height on his third chance.
  • Caleb Fineske placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 12.69m, while Walker Coleman's leap of 6.40m was good for eighth in the long jump.
  • The quartet of Marco Motroni, Richard Clark, Swann and Aaron Tobias claimed fifth place in the 4x100 relay. The team finished with a time of 42.15.
  • In the 1,500, Cluss crossed the finish line in fifth place, stopping the clock in 3:58.97.
  • Motroni and Clark each picked up points for Middlebury in the 100, finishing seventh and eighth in the finals round with times of 11:30 and 11:42, respectively. 
  • Jefferson Hill was sixth in the 110 hurdles with a clocking of 15.52, while Utz ran a 1:57.44 to finish seventh in the 800.
NOTES
  • Middlebury has finished in the top four of the NESCAC Championships for 11 consecutive years.
  • Any individual athlete or relay team finishing in the top-three spots earns All-NESCAC honors.
  • The high jump and pole vault events were contested on Friday afternoon due to impending weather for Saturday.
Middlebury will send a group of athletes to the Division III New England Championship hosted by Springfield next weekend.
