Second-Seeded Men’s Lacrosse to Host Hamilton in NESCAC Quarterfinal

The #5 Middlebury men's lacrosse team earned the second seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament with a 9-1 record. The Panthers will host seventh-seeded Hamilton on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium in NESCAC Quarterfinal action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. 
 
ABOUT MIDDLEBURY
  • Middlebury earned the second seed by putting together a 9-1 record in NESCAC play. 
  • This is the Panthers' 20th appearance in the conference tournament, tied for second most in the league's history. 
  • Middlebury has also won the second-most NESCAC Tournament contests (27) in the history of the event, trailing only Tufts who has won 38. 
  • The team will be looking to claim the program's eighth conference crown, with the last victory coming in 2007.
  • The squad leads Division III in clearing percentage (.927), and is first in the NESCAC, holding opponents to just 71.9 percent on clearing attempts this season.
PANTHERS TO WATCH
  • Russell Thorndike leads the Panthers with 51 points this season. The attacker has tallied 34 goals, which is tied for the team lead, while also contributing 17 assists. 
  • William Ryan and Billy Curtis each play a crucial role in Middlebury's successes. Ryan has fired in 34 goals on the year, tallying six or more points against three ranked teams this year, including six goals against then-#6 St. Lawrence. Curtis is tied for fifth in the NESCAC with 31 assists and sits second on the team with 50 points and recently eclipsed the 100-career point mark with six in the regular season finale.
  • Luke Simpson has caused the third most turnovers in the NESCAC this season (31). The defender ranks second on the team in ground balls, tallying 53 on the year. 
  • In the goal crease, Hayden Kern has started all 15 contests. The first-year has recorded double-digit saves on nine occasions, including a career-best 17 in his collegiate debut against Bowdoin. 
ABOUT HAMILTON
  • Hamilton is looking for the program's first NESCAC title. 
  • This is the Continentals fifth conference tournament appearance. The team is seeking the first postseason victory in program history.  
  • Hamilton finished the regular season with a 7-7 record and a 4-6 league mark.
  • The Continentals have been effective on the player-up advantage this season, leading the NESCAC with a .545 scoring percentage and ranking second in player-up goals per game (1.71).
CONTINENTALS TO WATCH
  • Torben Wunderle and Rowan Brumbaugh spearhead the Hamilton attack. Wunderle leads the squad in goals (38) and points (64), while Brumbaugh's 30 assists is a team high.
  • Thomas Healy is third on the team in points (42) from his midfield position, while also finding the back of the net 32 times this year. Long-stick midfielder Jayme Wilde leads the Continentals with 35 caused turnovers and has the second-most ground balls (51) behind the face-off man. 
  • Jack Fried has played the majority of the minutes in between the pipes for Hamilton. The goalkeeper boasts a .571 save percentage which is second in the conference. Fried made 19 saves earlier in the season against the Panthers.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Middlebury and Hamilton meet for the 32nd time with the Panthers holding a decisive 26-5 mark in the series. 
  • The two programs have never squared off in NESCAC Tournament play.
  • Earlier this season, Middlebury defeated the Continentals 14-7 on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium.  
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
  • Quarterfinals will occur at the top-four seeds on Saturday, April 29. The rest of the tournament will be hosted on Saturday, May 6 (Semifinals) and Sunday, May 7 (Championship) at the highest remaining seed.
