Fourth-Ranked Men’s Tennis Rallies Past #22 Amherst 6-3

The fourth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team rallied past 22nd-ranked Amherst 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Mammoths took a early 1-0 edge in doubles, claiming a 8-2 triumph at #2.
  • The duo of Noah Laber and Aidan Harris eased to an 8-4 win in the top spot to level the match at 1-1. 
  • Amherst took a 2-1 lead following a tightly-contested 8-7 win in the third slot.
  • In singles, the Mammoths increased its lead to 3-1 with a straight-sets victory at #3, but Laber responded with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the top of the lineup to make it 3-2. 
  • Julian Wu tied the match at 3-3. Wu jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first set and didn't look back, winning 6-3. He continued that momentum by cruising to a 6-3 triumph in his second set to take the match.
  • Harris gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead with a triumph in the second spot. Harris dropped the first set 6-2, but bounced back with impressive 6-1 and 6-2 victories to secure the three-set win.
  • Robby Ward clinched the match for Middlebury, claiming a tightly-contested match in the fifth slot. With the score tied 3-3 in the first set, Ward won three of the next four games to take the first set 6-4. In the second set with the score level at 5-5, Ward pulled away, claiming the last two games to earn a 7-5 win.
  • Zihao Yuan closed the match with a three-set triumph at #6 (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) to give the Panthers a 6-3 victory.  
NOTES
  • Wu continues his stellar first season at Middlebury, picking up his 21st win of the year and 19th straight. He remains undefeated this spring (12-0).
  • Laber's singles victory was his 10th of the spring.
  • Middlebury and Amherst faced off for the 70th time.
The Panthers will conclude the regular season on Sunday with a home match against Hamilton at 2:00 p.m.
