#5 Men’s Lacrosse Pulls Away From #11 Amherst 17-11

The fifth-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team did not allow a single goal in the third quarter as it pulled away from #11 Amherst to claim a 17-11 triumph in the penultimate regular season contest. With the win, the Panthers clinched the second seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Mammoths struck first, as Taynr Krummenacher found the back of the net after 2:29 of action. William Ryan answered just 30 seconds later, firing a shot from the right side of the crease into the bottom left corner of the goal to make it 1-1.
  • Amherst tallied a pair of quick markers to take a 3-1 lead, but the Panthers moved back to within one (3-2) when Finn Muldoon found William Munroe on the doorstep with 9:41 to go.
  • Middlebury scored twice in a 10 second span to take a 4-3 edge. Ryan slipped his shot home at the 8:24 mark, before a low tally from Billy Curtis beat Mammoth goalie Mitch Likins and gave the Panthers the one-goal edge with 8:14 to go.
  • Goals from Jake Peluso and Cooper DeMallie were canceled out by markers from Bob Gross and Krummenacher to make it 6-5 in favor of the visitors at the end of the first quarter.
  • Middlebury struck first in the second stanza. At the 9:54 mark, Logan White took a pass from Will Zink and fired the shot into the top left corner for a 7-5 advantage. Jack Sheehan increased the Panther edge to three (8-5), bouncing a shot into the net with 9:03 to go in the half. 
  • Jake Bennett got Amherst going in the second quarter, ripping a shot into the top shelf at the 6:58 mark to make it 8-6. Ryan recorded his hat trick with 6:28 remaining while a player down to push the advantage back to three (9-6). 
  • The Mammoths rattled off three unanswered goals in 48 seconds to level the contest at 9-9 with 4:08 to go.
  • Russell Thorndike restored Middlebury's lead with 1:47 left. The attacker ripped a long-distance effort past Likins to make it 10-9. Just over 30 seconds later, Ryan found the top left corner to take a two goal edge (11-9) into the halftime break.
  • Curtis opened the scoring in the third quarter, tallying two unanswered goals to give the Panthers a four goal advantage (13-9) at the 6:18 mark.
  • The Middlebury defense was sensational, not allowing a single goal in the stanza, and with 14 seconds left, DeMallie squeezed a turnaround shot past Likins to give the Panthers a 14-9 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
  • Amherst would not go away, cutting the deficit to three (14-11) with two goals to start the fourth quarter.
  • Ryan, Curtis and Thorndike each answered with a goal to put the game away and give Middlebury a 17-11 victory.
NOTES
  • The Panther defense was key in the win. The team allowed a season-low two goals in the entire second half and caused 11 turnovers to help seal the triumph.
  • Hayden Kern stopped 16 shots during the win, which is his second-highest total this season.
  • Middlebury and Amherst played for the 70th time. The Panthers own a 43-26-1 edge in the all-time series.
The Panthers will close the regular season when they travel to Williamstown, Mass. to face Williams on Wednesday, April 26 at 6:00 p.m.
