The Middlebury baseball team claimed a walk-off 9-8 victory in the first game of a twinbill against Hamilton but was edged 3-2 in the nightcap. The Panthers earned the series win, having topped Hamilton 8-6 on Friday evening. Prior to the start of today's games, Middlebury honored its senior class.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- With a pair of outs in the first, the Continentals tallied four unearned runs to take a 4-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the second, Andrew Gough singled down the left-field line to drive in Nathan Samii. Jack Stolper belted a triple to right field, bringing home Gough and Lucas Flemming, before later scoring himself on a single through the left side by Chris Borter to make it 4-4.
- Hamilton regained its lead in its next at-bat when Phil Bernstein reached on a fielder's choice, sending Greg Kopp home for the 5-4 edge.
- Middlebury took its first advantage of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Kyle McCausland blasted a single up the middle, scoring Zip Malley and Stolper for the 6-5 lead.
- The visitors knotted the contest 6-6 in the top of the sixth when Ethan Harrast touched the plate on a wild pitch.
- In the Panthers' half of the inning, Andrew Ashley pinch hit and brought home Sammy Smith on a sacrifice fly, before McCausland sprinted across the plate on a wild pitch for the 8-6 lead.
- The Continentals would not go away, knotting the game 8-8 in the seventh. Harrast singled to right center, and a pair of Hamilton players scampered home on an error to deadlock the contest and force extra innings.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Samii had a base hit and advanced to second on an error. A sacrifice bunt by Flemming moved Samii up to third, before a single by Gough sent Samii home for the 9-8 walk-off victory.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- The second game of the day got off to a slower start, with neither team scoring in the initial pair of innings. Middlebury broke through in the bottom of the third, when Smith touched home on a sacrifice fly by McCausland for the 1-0 edge.
- Hamilton tied the contest 1-1 in the fifth as Harrast singled, stole second and third and later touched home on an error.
- With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Continental Jack Griffin walked to drive in Carter Chambers. A sac fly by Harrast brought home Jackson Sattinger for the 3-1 lead.
- Middlebury got one run back in its half of the inning when a flyout and a sac fly sent Collins home to make it 3-2.
- Reliever Jackson Atwood retired the side in order in the seventh to give the Panthers a chance, but the Continentals made three-straight outs to secure the 3-2 win and rob Middlebury of a series sweep.
NOTES
- In the first game, the Panthers logged 14 hits, marking the 15th time this season with a double-digit hit total.
- The teams met for the 75th time in the final game of the series, as the Panthers own a 57-18 record all-time.
The Panthers host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., before traveling to Williams over the weekend for a three-game NESCAC West series.
