#7 Men’s Lacrosse Pulls Away From Springfield 15-8

The seventh-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team improved to 7-0 with a 15-8 victory over Springfield on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Panthers earned their best start to a season since 2008, and will face off against #2 Tufts on Saturday in a battle between undefeated squads.  
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury opened the game with four unanswered goals in the first 3:02 of action, exploding into a 4-0 lead. Tom Conley put the Panthers ahead with a low shot from the left side, before a long-range effort from Jack Sheehan made the score 2-0. Cooper DeMallie and Johnny Kantaros each tacked on a tally of their own to push the advantage to 4-0.
  • The Pride got on the board at the 10:35 mark as Kevin Tierney scooped up a rebound and found the back of the net to make the score 4-1.
  • Russell Thorndike pushed the Middlebury lead back to four (5-1) with 5:09 elapsed. After receiving a pass from Gray Thomas, Thorndike fired a shot that snuck inside the left post and into the back of the net.
  • Springfield answered with two goals over the next five minutes to close to cut the deficit to 5-3. 
  • With just 18 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Conley scored his second goal of the game to give the Panthers a 6-3 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • Logan White increased the Middlebury advantage to 7-3 after only 46 seconds in the second stanza, slipping a shot into the net from just outside the crease.
  • The Pride would not go away. Connor Roberts made the score 7-4 with a long-distance goal from nearly 70 yards at the 11:34 mark, before Mason Nocito's turnaround shot from the left corner found the back of the net to bring Springfield within two (7-5) at the break.
  • With three minutes gone by in the third quarter, the Pride made it a one goal game as Tierney converted on a shot right in front of the crease to make it 7-6.
  • The Panthers began to pull away at the 10:47 mark in the third quarter. DeMallie scored his second of the day, ripping a shot into the top left corner to give Middlebury a 8-6 lead.
  • The Panthers tacked on four goals in the final 5:03 highlighted by tallied from Will Zink, Thorndike, Luke Simpson and William Ryan to take a commanding 12-6 edge heading into the final quarter of play. 
  • With 4:09 elapsed in the final stanza, DeMallie registered his hat trick. He battled through contact in front of the net before firing a shot into the left corner to increase the lead to 13-6.
  • Alek Turi responded with a goal for Springfield at the 8:45 mark, but Middlebury answered, as Ryan and Zink each added another tally to make the score 15-7. 
  • Turi added a late consolation goal for the Pride with 18 seconds to go, bringing the final score to 15-8.
NOTES
  • With two goals in today's contest, Thorndike has now recorded at least a pair of markers in every game this season.
  • Goalie Hayden Kern has recorded double-digit saves in five of the seven contests he has played this season, including 13 in the triumph today.
  • The Panthers and Springfield played for the 49th time today. Middlebury owns a 36-13 edge in the all-time series and has won the last five matchups.
