#6 Women’s Tennis Slips Past #20 CalTech 5-4

The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip with a triumph over #20 CalTech on Thursday afternoon. The squad bounced back from a tight loss at #5 Pomona-Pitzer last night, and steadies its sights on a home match with #4 Wesleyan on Sunday.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers began the day with a 3-0 sweep in doubles. In the top spot, Amy Delman and Sahana Raman jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back, cruising to an 8-2 victory, while the duo of Nina Farhat and Sami Remis eased to an 8-3 win in the third spot. 
  • In the second spot, with the match knotted at 4-4, Gena Huang and Lulu Wu rattled off four of the next five points to give Middlebury the 3-0 lead.
  • The Beavers opened singles with a win at #2 to earn their first point of the day.
  • Nathalie van der Reis extended the Panthers advantage to 4-1, easing to a straight-sets victory in the fourth slot (6-1, 6-4).
  • CalTech answered with a triumph in the third spot to make the score 4-2.
  • Raman secured the win for Middlebury, claiming a hard-fought three-set victory in the top spot. In the final set, the Panther jumped out to a 3-0 advantage, and pulled away for the 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 triumph.
  • The Beavers concluded the match with wins at #5 and #6 to make the final score 5-4.
NOTES
  • Today's meeting was the first ever match between the two programs.
  • Van der Reis is undefeated in spring play (6-0) and is riding a team-high 11-match winning streak.
