Women’s Swimming & Diving Gears Up For NESCAC Championship

Members of the women's squad huddle before a meet earlier this year.
The Middlebury women's swimming and diving team is gearing up for the 2023 NESCAC Championships. The Panthers head to Bowdoin this week for the four-day event which begins on Thursday night with the 800-yard freestyle relay.

ABOUT MIDDLEBURY
  • Middlebury is seeking its first NESCAC title, as the program has finished in the top-three spots on 10 occasions.
  • Last year, the Panthers placed sixth overall and had five athletes qualify for the NCAA Championship.
  • The squad enters the meet with a record of 4-4, having won in dual meets against Connecticut College, Springfield, Colby and Hamilton earlier in the year.
 PANTHERS TO WATCH
  • The 400 medley relay squad composed of Maddy Reid, Hannah Baumgartner, Elise Scott and Emma Hall expect to make a splash in the pool. The quartet recorded an NCAA "B" cut time of 3:50.48 at the Middlebury Invitational.
  • Isabella Caddeau was part of the All-American 200 medley relay last season. The quartet placed 13th at the NCAA Championships, setting a program record with a time of 1:43.99. Caddeau just missed All-NESCAC laurels in the 50 backstroke a year ago, placing fourth at the championship meet.
  • Last year, Chloe Katz earned All-NESCAC honors in the 1,000 freestyle with a third-place finish. She closed out her rookie campaign competing in a trio of events at the NCAA Championship. This season, Katz has finished in first place seven times spanning freestyle events from 200 to 1,650 yards.
  • Lia Smith has taken home six individual victories off the diving boards this winter, winning three times off the 1-meter and a trio of crowns off the 3-meter.
  • Baumgartner and Scott have had breakout rookie campaigns. Baumgartner has won six individual events, while Scott has claimed the crown in five events.
  • In addition to the relay, Reid has won twice in the 100 backstroke and a pair of 50 back titles so far this winter.
 THE COMPETITION
  • Last year, Tufts dethroned 19-time NESCAC Championship program Williams to claim its first conference crown. Amherst is the only other team to defeat the Ephs, claiming the title in 2013.
  • The 2022 NESCAC Swimmer of the Year, Amanda Wager of Williams, returns to the pool this year. Last season, Wager won two individual events, was on two winning relays and finished as the runner-up in the third individual event.
