Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#8 Women’s Hockey Rushes Past Connecticut College 4-0

The fourth-seeded Middlebury women's hockey team scored a pair of first period goals and did not look back, en route to a 4-0 shutout victory over fifth-seeded Connecticut College in the NESCAC Quarterfinal. With the victory, the Panthers advance to the semifinals and will face top-seeded Amherst on Friday.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • With 9:19 elapsed, Connecticut College looked to get on the board. Claire Sammons drove to the net, but her wrap-around effort rattled the post and bounced away.
  • With 4:29 remaining in the opening stanza, Middlebury broke through. Sabrina Kim set up Cece Ziegler at the blueline, before Ziegler's long-range shot found the top corner of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury doubled its advantage during a power play with just over one minute left in the opening frame. Claudia Vira's initial blast from the point was saved, but Maddie Bayard was on the right pipe to tap in the loose puck to make the score 2-0.
  • The Camels had a power-play opportunity 1:39 into the second period. At the 2:46 mark, a blocked shot fell to Caroline O'Keefe who fired a shot that struck the outside of the right post.
  • The Panthers took a 3-0 lead with 13:08 to go in the middle stanza. Jenna Letterie centered a pass for Molly MacQueen, whose one-time effort slipped past Wieczorek and into the left corner of the goal.
  • Connecticut College continued to look for an answer. At the 10:46 mark, the Camels skated in with a three-on-one chance, but goalie Sophia Merageas denied a wrist shot from the right circle by Melanie Conca.
  • Middlebury scored its fourth goal with 3:53 elapsed in the final period. Avery McInerny redirected an initial shot by Britt Nawrocki, finding the bottom left corner for the 4-0 edge.
  • The Camels searched for a goal over the next 2:52, but Merageas made five saves during the span to preserve the 4-0 shutout.
NOTES
  • Letterie eclipsed the 100 career points mark on the first goal of the game. With three helpers tonight, she has 102 career points and has registered a point in nine-straight contests.
  • The victory was the 700th win in Middlebury women's ice hockey program history.
  • The Panthers are peaking at the right time, going 10-2-2 in the last 14 contests.
  • Middlebury avenged its regular season loss to the Camels and claimed its 43rd victory in the all-time series.
Middlebury will travel to Amherst to face the top-seeded Mammoths on Friday, March 3 at a time to be determined.
