Theo Kogan earned the first point of the day for Middlebury.
The fifth-seeded Middlebury men's squash team was edged 5-4 by fourth-seeded St. Lawrence in the College Squash Association (CSA) Summers Cup Quarterfinals on Friday. With the loss, the Panthers drop into the consolation bracket and will face Hamilton on Saturday in the consolation semifinals.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead with wins at #3, #9 and #1.
- Theo Kogan led 2-0 in the sixth slot, but St. Lawrence's Harry Robson mounted a comeback and tied the match 2-2. Kogan outlasted Robson 11-7 in the final game to give Middlebury its first point of the day.
- The Panthers cut the deficit to one (3-2) with a sweep in the seventh spot. Julian Sandoval raced out to a 2-0 lead. Tied 5-5 in the third game, Sandoval dug deep to earn an 11-6 win to continue Middlebury's momentum.
- The Saints extended the advantage to 4-2 with a straight-game sweep at #2.
- In the fifth spot, Kian Kardestuncer and Vladamir Iglesias went nearly point-for-point in each of the three games, but Iglesias edged Kardestuncer (9, 9, 9) to clinch the match at 5-2.
- At #8, Alexis Ballo earned a 3-1 victory (11-6, 12-14, 11-4, 11-6) to make it 5-3.
- Trailing 1-0 in the fourth slot, PK Keller came from behind to triumph 3-1, bringing the final score to 5-4.
NOTES
- Keller's win was the 30th of his career.
- Today's contest marked the first meeting between the two programs.
With the win, St. Lawrence advances to the semifinals and will take on Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday.
