Women’s Squash Erases Two Match Deficit To Claim Walker Cup Championship

The Middlebury women's squash team following a 6-3 victory over Georgetown in the Walker Cup Championship.
The #17 Middlebury women's squash team battled back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat #18 Georgetown 6-3 on Sunday morning. With the victory, the Panthers claimed the Collegiate Squash Association Walker Cup Championship, which is the C division of the national tournament.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Caroline Arena opened the day with a sweep at #6 (13-11, 11-7, 11-3) to give Middlebury a 1-0 lead.
  • The Hoyas answered with tightly-contested, five-game triumphs in the second and eighth spots to take a 2-1 edge.
  • Georgetown increased its lead to 3-1 following a victory in the middle of the ladder.
  • Izzy Ronda claimed a four-game win in the third slot (11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 11-3) to bring the Panthers back within one (3-2).
  • Maya Bardorf cruised to a three-game triumph at #7 (11-5, 11-7, 11-6), while Margaux Comai earned a four-game victory at #4 (11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5) to restore the Panthers 4-3 advantage.
  • At the bottom of the ladder, Grace Santoro clinched the match for Middlebury, easing to a 3-0 victory (11-4, 11-3, 11-6). 
  • Lindsey Burnham closed out the match with a four-match triumph (11-4, 7-11, 11-4, 11-5) to seal the 6-3 win.
NOTES
  • Bardorf earned her 10th straight victory during the championship. She improves her record to 12-1 on the season.
  • This is the Panthers' third ever Walker Cup Championship and first since 2005.
Members of the team will travel to the CSA Individuals & Doubles Championship the weekend of March 3-5, with the draws to be determined at a later date.
