Griffis Earns All-NESCAC & 200 Medley Relay Breaks School Record Third Day of NESCACs

The 200-yard medley relay team broke a 12-year-old school record and Riley Griffis earned All-NESCAC accolades in the 200-yard freestyle, highlighting day three of the NESCAC Championships for the Middlebury men's swimming and diving team. The Panthers move up to seventh place with 624 points, while #5 Williams continues to lead the team standings after three days with 1,362 points. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the final event of the evening, the 200 medley quartet of Jack Undercofler, Matthew Hensel, Griffis and Samuel Hughes posted a school-record time of 1:31.89 to finish in ninth place. The time erases the previous mark of 1:32.25 set in 2011.
  • Griffis earned All-NESCAC accolades in the 200 free, touching the wall in second place. He stopped the clock with an NCAA "B" cut and season-best time of 1:38.61, which was just under four-tenths of a second off the school record. 
  • Jason Rickenbacher followed up Friday's All-NESCAC performance on the 1-meter board with a fifth-place showing off the 3-meter. Rickenbacher accumulated 395.65 points, while Owen White was eighth with 353.30 points.
  • Paul Shen won the consolation final during the 100 breaststroke with a season-best time of 56.01.
  • Hughes was 10th in the 100 back with a clocking of 50.12, lowering his season-best time by 2.22 seconds. Undercofler was just behind in 14th in the event (50.59).
  • Will Sonne raced to the wall in 12th place during the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:47.32, just ahead of teammate Pierce Bigelow in 13th (9:48.80).
  • Undercofler was 16th in the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 51.04.
The Panthers are back in action for the final day on Sunday morning with preliminaries beginning at 10:00 a.m.
