Men’s Hockey Falls To Amherst In Regular-Season Finale

The Middlebury men's hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to Amherst on Senior Day in Chip Kenyon '85 Arena. The game was the final contest of the 2022-23 season for the Panthers as the team was edged out of the NESCAC Tournament.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Amherst looked to get on the board 1:48 into the first period as Andrew Carmody's wrister from the blueline was saved by the glove of Middlebury goalie Jake Horoho.
  • The Mammoths took a 1-0 lead with 4:48 elapsed. Tyler Bourque won the faceoff on the right dot, sending the puck back to Ben Ritter. Ritter skated between the circles, ripping a wrister that tucked into the upper-right corner of the net.
  • The Panthers looked to tie the contest near the 13-minute mark with three-straight shots. The best chance came when Paddy Bogart's bid from the right post was saved by the left pad of Amherst netminder Connor Leslie.
  • The Mammoths nearly increased the lead six minutes into the second stanza when Zach Murray's wraparound shot was saved on the left post by Horoho's pad.
  • Middlebury produced its best opportunity at the 11:44 mark when a wrister from Bret Pastor was saved by Leslie. The rebound popped back to the stick of Pastor, who fired a shot that pinged off the right pipe.
  • Amherst made it a 2-0 contest on a power play, cycling the puck around the zone. Greg McGunigle sent a pass from the right slot to the stick of Joshua Burke who fired it into the left side at 18:12.
  • The visitors increased their advantage with 4.7 seconds left, as Carmody lifted a rising shot into the right corner for a 3-0 edge.
  • Middlebury looked to cut into the deficit with 8:24 elapsed in the final period, but a shot by Zach Whitehead from just outside the crease was saved by Leslie.
  • The Panthers pulled Horoho with 11:10 left in favor of the extra skater, but the Mammoths scored 21 seconds later on an empty-net tally from Burke.
  • Amherst added another empty-net goal from Quinton Fox with 1:35 left for the final 5-0 score.
