Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Big Third Period Lifts #7 Middlebury Past #5 Hamilton 2-0

The seventh-ranked Middlebury women's ice hockey team tallied a pair of power-play goals in the third period to shutout #5 Hamilton 2-0. With the win, the Panthers snap the Continentals nine-game unbeaten streak, while improving its own unbeaten mark to six (5-0-1).

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The hosts had a good chance to score with 3:52 expired. Hyla Mosher skated onto the puck along the left boards and rifled a shot from the left circle, but Middlebury netminder Sophia Merageas denied the bid with a nice glove save.
  • After a scramble in front of the goal, Hamilton had back-to-back chances from point-blank range at the 7:34 mark, but Merageas made a pair of phenomenal stops to keep the game scoreless.
  • Middlebury's Jenna Letterie looked to open the scoring with 13:49 elapsed when she stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated in on goal, but her backhanded attempt was denied by goalie Evie Sheridan.
  • With 6:52 gone in the middle frame, Cece Ziegler ripped a shot from the right point that trickled through traffic, but Sheridan was there to thwart the chance.
  • At the 8:14 mark, Hamilton earned its second power play of the game, but Middlebury's penalty kill unit did not allow a single shot by the Continentals during the span.
  • The Panthers had a great opportunity to score with 12:14 elapsed when Avery McInerny centered a pass to Britt Nawrocki on the doorstep, but Nawrocki's one-time bid was smothered by Sheridan.
  • The best chance for either team to score came with 1:22 left in the frame. Abby Kuhns skated from the defensive end into the offensive zone with a head of steam. Kuhns' initial shot was turned away by Merageas, but the rebound bounced back into traffic. A Continental was there to attempt to tip-in the loose puck, but the Middlebury blueliners denied the chance and killed off their third penalty.
  • The Panthers took advantage of their first power play of the evening, scoring just 18 seconds in. Letterie gathered the puck behind the Hamilton goal and sent it to McInerny on the edge of the left circle. McInerny fired the puck on goal, but before Sheridan could save it, Letterie poked the puck to the slot where Nawrocki was there to one-time the feed into the goal for the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury did not let up, scoring during a power play at the 10:34 mark. This time, Letterie one-timed a cross-ice pass from Nawrocki, slipping the puck into the goal for the 2-0 lead.
  • The Continentals had a chance to cut the deficit in half after pulling their goalie, but Merageas made a sprawling save to deny Kuhns' bid at the 18:11 mark.
  • Hamilton was awarded a power play with 45 seconds left in the frame, but the Panthers killed off the clock to secure the 2-0 shutout.
NOTES
  • Nawrocki's goal was her conference-leading sixth game-winner of the season.
  • Letterie eclipsed the 20-point mark for the third-straight year, as she now has eight goals and 12 assists.
  • Merageas recorded her second shutout of the season with 22 saves.
