Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Panthers Topple Beacons 7-0 In 2023 Finale

The fifth-ranked Middlebury women's ice hockey team scored four times in the opening period, en route to a 7-0 shutout against the University of Massachusetts Boston.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers took advantage of an early power play, striking with just 2:08 expired. An initial blast from just inside the blue line by Callia Ferraris was redirected by Avery McInerny on the doorstep to begin the scoring frenzy.
  • Middlebury increased its advantage midway through the stanza when Sabrina Kim rifled a shot from the top of the circles that found its way through the five-hole for the 2-0 lead.
  • The Panthers didn't let up, tallying another goal with 11:53 elapsed. Cece Ziegler stole the puck from a Beacon defender near the top of the right faceoff circle and centered a pass that Rachel Neyman one-timed into the back of the net for the 3-0 advantage.
  • Middlebury capped the first-period scoring with 1:30 remaining when McInerny went bar down from the left dot to make it 4-0.
  • With just 21 ticks off the clock in the middle frame, the Panthers extended their advantage to 5-0. An initial shot by Olivia McManus was denied by goalie Leah Bosch, causing an ensuing scramble in front of the goal mouth. Eventually, Molly MacQueen got her stick on the puck, slipping it past Bosch.
  • Middlebury added a pair of markers in the final frame. Kate Flynn scored 1:43 into the stanza, tucking her shot under the crossbar, before Ferraris made it 7-0 with a beautiful bar-down tally at the 16:39 mark.
NOTES
  • Ferraris and Neyman tallied their first career goals during the win.
  • Bridget Gray earned her first start in net for the Panthers, stopping all six shots faced to secure the shutout in her debut.
  • McInerny doubled her career-point total in a single game, registering four with two goals and a pair of assists.
  • Kim's and MacQueen's tallies were their respective firsts of the season.
  • The Panthers and the Beacons played for the 11th time this evening, with Middlebury claiming each of those contests. The Panthers have outscored UMass.-Boston 60-6 over that span.

Middlebury closed out the 2023 portion of its schedule, returning to the ice on January 6 to host Endicott at 3:00 p.m.
