Trio of Third Period Goals Lift #5 Women’s Hockey Past Spartans 3-1

A trio of third period goals sparked a comeback victory, as the fifth-ranked Middlebury women's hockey team defeated VTSU Castleton 3-1 on Tuesday evening.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The visitors looked to take an early lead after 3:11 of action. Cece Ziegler blasted a long-range effort from the blueline which was saved by Spartan netminder Kirsten Diccico. The rebound fell to Delanie Goniwiecha, who tried to flick her effort over the right shoulder of the goaltender, but Diccico knocked it over the top of the net.
  • The Panthers tested Dicicco with multiple shots just past the halfway point of the period. At the 11:50 mark, Goniwiecha redirected a bid from Julia Johnson towards the bottom left corner, but the Castleton goalie sprawled to push the bid aside.
  • Middlebury nearly moved ahead at the 7:40 mark in the second period. Avery McInenry received the puck on the left side of the zone and zipped a centering pass to Olivia McManus. McManus' one-time effort looked bound for the left corner, but was snagged by Dicicco to keep the game scoreless.
  • Castleton took the lead at the 12:25 mark of the middle frame. Meg Aiken pounced on a deflected centering pass in the defensive zone and raced up the ice. She evaded two defenders on the right side before dragging the puck across the goal and sliding her back-handed bid past Panther goalie Sophia Will for the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury tried to respond in the waning moments of the second period. Meg Simon found Molly MacQueen right in front of the net, but her point-blank shot was thwarted.
  • With 15 seconds to go in the period, Sabrina Kim wristed a bid that was tipped goalwards by Kate Flynn and denied by the left pad of Dicicco. Flynn grabbed her own rebound and found McInerny in front, but her consecutive close-range shots were stopped as the Spartans hung onto the advantage with one period left to play.
  • The Panthers leveled the contest 11 seconds past the midway point of the final stanza. Flynn ripped a shot from a tight angle that was stopped by Dicicco, but the rebound fell to Jordan Hower who was on the doorstep to knock the puck into the bottom left corner and make it 1-1.
  • Middlebury kept its foot on the gas and took a 2-1 edge less than a minute later. MacQueen fired a centering pass to Raia Schluter who one-timed a pass toward the crease where Kylie Quinlan was on hand to flick the puck into the net.
  • The Panthers continued to threaten for the remainder of the period. With 12 seconds to go, Britt Nawrocki capped the evening with an empty-net goal to ensure the 3-1 triumph.
NOTES
  • Nawrocki tallied her first point of the season, and her 17th in the last 25 games, dating back to last season.
  • Middlebury and Castleton played for the ninth time in an all-time series in which the Panthers own an 8-1-0 advantage.
Middlebury returns to the ice when it hosts #15 Endicott in the opening game of the Panther/Cardinal Classic on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
