#20 Men’s Squash Opens Season With Victories over Wesleyan and Vassar

Will Quigley earned two wins during the day.
The 20th-ranked Middlebury men's squash team cruised to a 7-2 season-opening victory over Wesleyan, before closing the day with a 9-0 sweep against Vassar.
 
HIGHLIGHTS VS. WESLEYAN
  • Charlie Clifford got the Panthers on the board first, easing past his opponent in the eighth slot in three games (11-7, 11-4, 11-7). 
  • At #5, Gabe Thin secured a three-game win over his opponent (11-6, 11-3, 11-1) to double Middlebury's lead.
  • Wesleyan's lone point came at the top of the ladder. 
  • At the bottom of the ladder, Will Quigley swept his opponent, cruising to an 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 triumph. 
  • David Zhao increased the lead to 4-1 with an 11-8, 13-11, 11-6 sweep #6.
  • In the fourth spot, Theo Kogan responded to an opening game defeat, winning the next three to claim a four-game victory and clinch the win for the Panthers. 
  • PK Keller (11-8, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8) and Alex Stimpson (11-0, 11-3, 9-11, 11-1) each earned 3-1 decisions in the third and seventh slots, respectively. 
  • The Cardinals closed the match with a four-game win at #2 to bring the final score to 7-2.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. VASSAR
  • Noah Lazar began with a sweep at #8 to give Middlebury a 1-0 edge.
  • Stimpson (11-3, 11-2, 11-4) and Caleb Boateng (11-6, 11-3, 11-7) eased to triumphs at the fifth and top spots, respectively, to increase the lead to 3-0.
  • At #6, Clifford swept his opponent (11-4, 11-1, 11-5), before Kogan clinched the contest with a three-game win at #3. 
  • Kian Lalji (#9), Keller (#2) and Quigley (#7) each eased to victory to complete the 9-0 sweep over Vassar.
NOTES
  • Thin, Clifford and Zhao each won their first collegiate matches against Wesleyan, while Lazar earned his first victory during the game against the Brewers.
  • Middlebury and the Cardinals met for the 13th time with the Panthers owning an 11-1 advantage. Middlebury has won the last 10 contests, including 9-0 decisions in the last two matchups. 
  • Middlebury and Vassar have played five ties with the Panthers winning each one 9-0.
Middlebury is idle until January 5th, when it hosts Navy, Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall over the course of the weekend.
