Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#3 Men’s Soccer Falls Short 1-0 at #13 Amherst

The #3 Middlebury men's soccer team's NCAA Tournament run ended in the quarterfinal round, falling 1-0 to NESCAC foe #13 Amherst on Sunday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Mammoths had their first chance five minutes into the game. Ada Okorogheye curled a low effort from 22 yards out that rolled just wide of the right post.
  • At the 17:10 mark, Amherst looked destined to take the lead. Okorogheye flicked a pass down the left side of the box for Mohammed Nuhu who fired a shot toward the bottom left corner, but goalie Ryan Grady got a finger to it to tip the shot wide.
  • The Mammoths moved ahead at the 22:49 mark. Following a corner kick, Simon Kalinauskas redirected a header off the post that bounced to Ben Clark-Eden who blasted a shot inside the near post from the left edge of the six-yard box for the 1-0 edge.
  • Amherst was awarded a penalty kick with less than eight minutes before the halftime break. Clark-Eden stepped up to double his goal tally on the day, but his attempt was denied by Grady who dove to his left to push the bid aside and keep it a one-goal contest.
  • The Mammoths controlled the majority of play in the second half. Nuhu attempted to score a second marker in the 58th minute, but his shot from the right side struck the outside of the side netting.
  • Middlebury's best chances came with less than two minutes to go. Jay Hoke and Kyle Nilsson each whipped in multiple crosses to the box, but the Amherst defense did not allow the Panther offense to penetrate.
  • At the 88:24 mark, Hoke sent a pass to Jordan Saint-Louis on the left side of the box. The forward tried to blast a shot on frame, but an Amherst defender was there to close down the attempt and clear it away.
  • With just seconds remaining, the Panthers nearly equalized. Goalkeeper Grady came forward and managed to get a bid on frame, but Mammoths goalie Max Landa smothered the effort to close out the 1-0 defeat.
NOTES
  • Saint-Louis concludes his career with 69 points, 24 goals and 21 assists. His 21 helpers are third in program history. This season, the forward contributed 32 points and 12 assists, which are tied for fifth and second, respectively.
  • Grady finishes his time at Middlebury as the school record holder in clean sheets (40) and saves (278). The goalkeeper also ranks second and third place in single-season shutouts with 12 (2021) and 11 (2023) and is fifth in career save percentage (.855).
  • The Panthers made their fifth appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals, facing the Mammoths for the fourth time in the tournament and the second time in the elite eight.
  • During Middlebury's victory over Johns Hopkins in the second round, the Panthers set a school record for most goals scored in a season. The squad ran that total to 52, erasing the previous mark of 46 from 2015.
  • Middlebury recorded 15 total wins this season, which is tied for third-most in the program's history.
