Men’s Hockey Drops 4-3 Overtime Contest at Bowdoin

The Middlebury men's hockey team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead against Bowdoin, but eventually dropped a tightly-contested game by a 4-3 scoreline in overtime.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Polar Bears jumped out to a 1-0 edge after 2:22 of action. Michael Dinges retrieved a loose puck on the right side of the offensive zone and fed Bryce Bollman in front of the net. The first-year forward made no mistake, clipping the puck into the net to give the hosts the lead.
  • Bowdoin doubled its advantage at the 11:58 mark. Richard Davis secured the puck near the right boards and fired a pass to Patrick Callahan who immediately returned the puck to Davis. Davis skated in and buried his shot past the pad of Panther goaltender Andrew Heinze and inside the left post for the 2-0 advantage.
  • Middlebury halved the deficit at the 8:05 mark of the second period. Ryan Pineault sent a pass up the ice that reached Wyatt Pastor. Pastor flicked the pass to Andrej Hromic who skated into the zone and ripped a shot that beat Polar Bears netminder Alex Kozic to make it 2-1.
  • With 25 seconds remaining in the period, the Panthers leveled the game at 2-2 as Hromic found himself on the scoresheet for a second time. Jin Lee dug the puck out of the left corner of the offensive zone and centered a pass for Hromic who one-timed a shot past Kozic to send Middlebury into the intermission with momentum.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure and took the lead with 2:42 expired in the final period. Kevin Golden looked to center the puck from the left corner and banked his effort off of a defender's skate, which deflected into the goal to give Middlebury a 3-2 edge.
  • Bowdoin answered just over two minutes later. Callahan carried the puck into the zone and found Justin Wright who connected with Nate Clark. Clark blasted a shot toward the crease, and Callahan redirected the effort past Heinze to even the contest at 3-3.
  • The teams each had superb chances to regain the lead throughout the final period, but neither side could find the breakthrough as the game headed to overtime.
  • Just 12 seconds into overtime, the Polar Bears found the golden goal. Luke Wheeler skated past multiple defenders before dragging the puck across the goalmouth and flipping his shot into the net as he slid across the ice to bring the final score to 4-3.
NOTES
  • Jackson Morehouse picked up his first career point, assisting on Middlebury's third goal.
  • Heinze made 29 saves in his collegiate debut in goal for the Panthers.
  • The programs squared off for the 94th time on Saturday. Bowdoin holds a slight 43-41-10 advantage in the all-time series.
