Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#6 Women’s Hockey Opens Season With 3-0 Victory Over Trinity

The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's hockey team scored two goals in the opening 8:27 of the contest and did not look back, easing to a 3-0 season-opening win over Trinity.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Bantams nearly grabbed an early advantage 2:05 into the opening period. Jenny Guider collected a loose puck at center ice and skated into the offensive zone before ripping a slap shot from top of the left circle that was tipped over the goal by Panther netminder Sophia Will.
  • Middlebury looked to get on the board with 5:17 elapsed. An initial shot from Olivia McManus was saved by Trinity goalie Hannah Leclair, and the rebound popped out to Molly MacQueen, whose one-timer was also pushed aside to preserve the score.
  • The Panthers took the lead after 7:19 had elapsed in the first stanza. Liv Fernandez chipped the puck up the boards to Kate Flynn. Flynn skated down the right side of the zone and tucked her close-range effort past Leclair and inside the near pipe for a 1-0 edge.
  • Just over a minute later, Middlebury struck again. Raia Schluter received the puck in transition and skated toward the left circle, firing a shot from the dot that snuck between Leclair's right shoulder and the left pipe to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure to begin the second period. Less than two minutes in, Leclair was forced to make superb back-to-back saves to deny Schluter on consecutive bids.
  • Middlebury made it 3-0 halfway through the frame. Callia Ferraris blasted a shot from the blueline that was thwarted by Leclair. The rebound crept to Cat Appleyard in front of the net, and she made no mistake, firing the puck into the net to score the Panthers' third marker.
  • The Bantams responded with a flurry of chances. At the 12:42 mark, Guider zipped through two defenders and wristed a short-handed shot from between the circles that was snagged by Will. Seconds later, Marta Mazzocchi had an opportunity from the right circle, but Will was on hand to make the save.
  • Middlebury began the third period with a power play and looked to extend the lead. The Panthers pelted Leclair with shots, including five successive efforts, but the Trinity netminder kept Middlebury at bay.
  • With 4:20 to go in the contest, the Panthers almost added a fourth tally. Britt Nawrocki controlled the puck just outside the crease and was one-on-one with Leclair who would not let her past, thwarting the chance as Middlebury cruised to the 3-0 final scoreline.
NOTES
  • Flynn's goal was the first of her career, while Ferraris also secured her first career point.
  • Middlebury and Trinity play for the 52nd with the Panthers owning a decisive 44-4-4 advantage in the all-time series
  • Middlebury has won the last 17 meetings between the two teams.
The Panthers return to the ice on Saturday to complete the two-game set with Trinity at 4:00 p.m.
