Middlebury Edges Babson 2-1 In Non-Conference Finale

The Middlebury women's soccer team scored a goal in each half on its way to a 2-1 victory over Babson in its final non-conference match of the regular season.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Beavers looked to get on the scoreboard of an action-packed opening half in the second minute, but a bouncing shot by Jordyn Ferrantino was saved by Panther goalie Carolyn Kelley.
  • Five minutes later, a 45-yard free kick by Laura Lukowicz initially found the back of the net, but it was disallowed because of a Beaver foul committed in the 18-yard box.
  • Middlebury manufactured back-to-back chances in the 12th minute. A quick shot by Baldwin Gittens was denied by goalie Callahan Cottone who came charging off her line. Cate Woolsey collected the rebound, but her bid was thwarted when Cottone raced back and caught the attempt.
  • The Panthers nearly scored the contest's initial goal at 24:13, but an arcing shot from just inside the 18-yard box by Joely Virzi hit the crossbar and caromed away.
  • Middlebury broke the scoreless tie with 15:43 showing on the first-half clock. Virzi collected a long cross from the left and settled it, before ripping a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner for the 1-0 lead.
  • Babson knotted the contest at 1-1 eight minutes later on a penalty kick. Emma Mumby stepped to the dot and buried a penalty kick just over the outstretched hands of Kelley.
  • The hosts looked to take the lead with just under three minutes left in the first frame, but a header shot by Mumby went wide of the right post for a 1-1 halftime score.
  • In the early stages of the second half, Middlebury produced a handful of scoring chances. The best one came 4:04 in on a left-footed shot by Mia Feldman that Cottone saved moving to her right.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure, scoring the game-winning tally after a corner kick with 22:55 remaining. The swinging cross was misplayed, falling to Roshann Purcell who blasted the ball into the back of the net from point-blank range for a 2-1 advantage.
  • Middlebury nearly scored three minutes later, but a bounding shot by Gigi Day was cleared away by Babson defender Claudia Baiter just before it crossed the line.
  • With 4:21 left, Woolsey nearly added an insurance goal, but Cottone dove to her right to smother the attempt.
  • The Panther defense locked down over the remainder of the contest, not allowing a Beaver shot for the final 2-1 score.
NOTES
  • The goal was Purcell's first of the season and the initial game-winning tally of her career.
  • Middlebury improves to 35-13-4 over the last seven seasons away from Allan Dragone Field
  • The programs met for the first time in women's soccer.
