Day’s Double Leads Women’s Soccer Past #12 Williams 2-1

A second-half brace from Gigi Day ensured that the Middlebury women's soccer team closed out its regular season with a thrilling 2-1 road victory at 12th-ranked Williams on Tuesday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers nearly took the lead at the 24:32 mark. Stella Espinasse whipped in a corner kick and Roshann Purcell rose highest to head the ball towards goal, but her effort thundered off the crossbar.
  • The Ephs responded with a chance with 16:40 remaining. Isabel Konijnenberg received a pass at the top of the 18-yard box and rifled a shot toward the lower left corner, but Carolyn Kelley dove to her right to smother the bid.
  • Middlebury took a 1-0 lead after 7:40 of action in the second half. Frankie Getman broke away down the left flank and found Abby Ward in the box. Ward slipped a one-time pass to the back post where Day tapped the ball into the net for the advantage.
  • With 25:22 left in the contest, Williams was inches from an equalizer. Piper Dupies ripped a left-footed shot that looked destined for the top-right corner but rattled off the crossbar to maintain the Panthers' lead.
  • In the 70th minute, Middlebury doubled its lead. Ward found Day streaking through the middle of the field. Day collected the pass and unleashed a stunning left-footed strike from 25 yards which rippled the netting in the right corner and gave the Panthers a 2-0 edge.
  • With 6:30 to go, the Ephs halved the deficit. Sam Brown floated a cross into the box and Marabi Dyson found the ball at her feet. Dyson flicked her shot into the bottom right corner to bring the score to 2-1.
  • Williams threatened throughout the final five minutes of play, but the Middlebury backline stood strong and held on for the 2-1 triumph.
NOTES
  • With two tallies in today's game, Day ends her first-year campaign with a team-high six goals.
