Wu Highlights ITA Cup With Singles Semifinals Appearance

Julian Wu, Hugh Hentschel and Thehan Wijemanne all competed at the ITA Cup.
Box Score Middlebury men's tennis players Julian Wu, Hugh Hentschel and Thehan Wijemanne represented the Panthers at the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia. Wu had an incredible run, reaching the semifinals in singles, while Hentschel and Wijemanne made their doubles debut at the event.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Third-seeded Wu won Thursday's opening set against George Fox's Eli Mizerski 6-2. Mizerski rebounded to level the match at a set apiece with a 6-3 victory. 
  • Trailing 4-1 in the decisive third set, Wu posted wins in the final five games to earn a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 triumph.
  • During his quarterfinal match, the Panther won the initial set 6-4 against Washington & Lee's Evan Erb. The General leveled the tally at 1-1 with a 6-4 victory. Wu advanced to the semifinal round with a convincing 6-1 win in the third set. 
  • Wu bowed out in the semifinals, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to second-seeded Jordan Theron of Sewanee. 
  • Hentschel and Wijemanne won their initial set 6-4 in Thursday's opening match against Nolan Shah and Dean Kamenev from Emory. The Eagle duo won a second-set tiebreaker 7-6 (5) before advancing in the bracket with a 10-5 win in the superbreaker. 
  • In the backdraw, the Panther duo squared off against Aiden Drover-Mattinen and Andy Zhu from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and topped a pair from George Fox 6-2, 6-3 in the South draw.
NOTES
  • Wu became the seventh Middlebury player to compete at the ITA Cup in singles, while Hentschel and Wijemanne were the fourth Panther duo. 
The ITA Cup marked the final event of the fall season, as Middlebury is idle until the spring season begins in March.
