The third-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team scored two goals in Wednesday's second half on its way to a 2-0 victory at Eastern Nazarene. With the triumph, the Panthers earned the program's 600th all-time win.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury nearly got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute with a pair of quality chances. Kyle Nilsson slipped a pass to Will Sawin on the right side of the box that was saved by Lion goalie Gabriel Viau. On the ensuing corner kick, Luke Madden headed the ball back across the box to Nilsson, whose one-time volley whistled just over the crossbar.
- With 14:28 elapsed in the opening half, Sawin found space after a free kick bounced to his feet in the box, but Viau got his hand on Sawin's close-range effort and tipped it wide of the right post.
- Eastern Nazarene produced its best opportunity of the opening stanza in the 20th minute. Mattia Zuin played a long pass to Wendy Bigor who was one-on-one with Panther goalie Ryan Grady, but Madden and Grady combined to smother his attempt inside the six-yard box.
- Middlebury looked to close out the half with the lead, but a shot by Colin Dugan with just over a minute on the clock skidded just wide of the right post for a scoreless opening stanza.
- The Panthers continued to apply pressure out of the intermission, manufacturing quality opportunities in the opening minutes. The best bid came when Jordan Saint-Louis rocketed a shot from close range with 3:30 elapsed that hit the outside of the right panel.
- Middlebury got on the board with 23:54 left. Following a cross by Harper Nicholl, Gavin Randolph rocketed a one-touch strike into the lower-left corner past a sprawling Viau for the 1-0 lead.
- The visitors looked to increase their advantage with 20:50 remaining, but a header from Alem Muris Hadzic sailed just wide of the left post.
- Eastern Nazarene had its best chance of the second frame on a counter when Nico Kaczmarczyk's flick toward the upper-left corner was saved by Grady moving to his right.
- Viau kept the match a one-goal difference with 15:10 left, saving a surging shot from Randolph with his feet.
- Looking for the equalizer, Eastern Nazarene's Jorge Gonzalez laced a bid from 30 yards away with 6:45 remaining that went just over the crossbar.
- The Panthers made it a 2-0 contest with 3:12 showing on the clock on a great individual effort from Sawin. After collecting an errant pass, Sawin dribbled through three defenders before tucking a shot between the legs of Viau for the final 2-0 score.

- The triumph was the 50th for Panther head coach Alex Elias with a 50-17-20 mark.
- Grady earns his sixth shutout of the season and the 35th of his career.
- Saint-Louis has tallied at least one point in six of the last seven contests.
- Middlebury continues its best start in nearly 25 years dating back to the 1999 season when the program began sporting a 10-0-2 mark.
- The programs met for the third time in men's soccer with the Panthers winning all three contests.
