Middlebury Sweeps ITA Regionals, Claiming Singles and Doubles Titles

Thehan Wijemanne and Hugh Hentschel claimed the ITA doubles title, while Julian Wu earned the singles crown.
Box Score Hugh Hentschel and Thehan Wijemanne of the #3 Middlebury men's tennis team won the ITA Regionals Doubles competition, while Julian Wu claimed the singles crown. The trio earned automatic bids to the ITA Cup that will take place October 12-16 in Rome, Georgia.
 
DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
  • The pair of Hentschel and Wijemanne topped Oliver Obeid and Garv Bahl 8-7(5) of Tufts in a tiebreaker to move on to the round of 32 and secured a place in the round of 16 with a win over Dylan Walters and Tommy Harrison of Brandeis 8-7(4). The duo claimed two-consecutive triumphs to reach the semifinal round. 
  • Wu and Joe Mairs secured a first-round bye and defeated Andrew Mendelson and Mick Tamas of Bowdoin 8-6 in the round of 32. The pair then won back-to-back matches to set up an all-Middlebury semifinal round.
  • On Sunday, Hentschel and Wijemanne topped Wu and Mairs 8-3 to move on to the final. In the championship, the pair defeated Maes and Ganji (6-4, 5-7, 6-2) to claim the doubles title. 
  • The pair of Neel Epstein and Noah Lewis also earned a bye in the opening round. Epstein and Lewis edged Babson's Martin Mejia and Logan Back 8-7(4) and upset the top-seeded Derin Acaroglu and Andrej Djokic of Tufts 8-6 in the round of 16 before falling in the quarterfinal round.
  • The duo of Maximus Kim and Nikky Kondamuri earned an 8-4 first-round victory over Jose Gonzalez and Eshan Mukherjee of Babson. 
SINGLES "A" DRAW HIGHLIGHTS
  • Five of the six participating Panthers earned a win in the round of 64.
  • Wu eased to the round of 16 where he upset third-seeded Reid Staples of Bowdoin 6-4, 6-1. The Panther followed that up with a 7-5, 6-7(0), 6-1 victory over fifth-ranked Kailas Kahler from MIT to book a spot in the semifinal where he rushed past second-ranked Joey Barrett 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Wu carried his momentum into the championship match, knocking off top-seeded Matt Kandel of Williams 6-4, 6-2.
  • Mairs downed Bowdoin's Mendelson 6-7(6), 7-6(6), 6-4 in the round of 32, before falling to Alex Merson of Brandeis in the round of 16.
SINGLES "B" DRAW HIGHLIGHTS
  • Wijemanne earned a first-round bye. In the round of 32, Wijemanne downed Jumbos' Mauricio Gutierrez 8-4, before falling in the round of 16 to Andrew Watson of Babson 7-6(5), 6-2. 
  • Kondamuri defeated Tufts' Takehiro Shuda 8-5 in the round of 32 and bowed out to Bates' Nikesh Desai 3-6, 6-3, 4-10 in the following round.
The Panthers will return to action next weekend when they travel to Skidmore for the East vs. Rest Invitational.
