Middlebury's
Avery McInerny scored with 1.3 seconds left in overtime, lifting the seventh-ranked Panther women's ice hockey team to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory at Colby. Middlebury trailed 3-1 midway through the second period and battled back for the win at the Jack Kelley Rink, completing the weekend sweep.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers went on the power play 3:01 into the opening period. Middlebury scored just nine seconds into the penalty, as a slap shot from the left point by Claudia Vira snuck past the shoulder of Mule netminder Mandy Busky.
- Colby looked for the equalizer 30 seconds later, but a shot from just inside the blueline by Alex Thomas was saved by Sophia Will's right pad.
- The Mules knotted the contest in the final seconds of a power-play opportunity. Meg Rittenhouse collected a loose puck just outside the crease and shoveled it into the net at the 9:26 mark to even the game at 1-1.
- The Panthers nearly scored their second goal with five minutes left in the period, but McInerny's rebound attempt hit the left pipe to keep it a deadlocked game after the first stanza.
- The Mules took a 2-1 lead 9:08 into the middle stanza. Rittenhouse intercepted a pass at the blueline, skated in one-on-one with Will and lifted a shot into the upper-right corner.
- Colby increased its advantage to 3-1 just 1:26 later. Following a faceoff win, Jo Tattersall roped a shot from the blue line that hit the left pipe and bounced in.
- The Panthers had a good chance to pull closer as Jenna Letterie skated into the zone with a full head of steam. She ripped a shot that was saved by the left shoulder of Busky at 15:20 to maintain Colby's two-goal lead after 40 minutes.
- Middlebury cut the deficit to one (3-2) with 7:50 expired in the third stanza. Cat Appleyard gathered a loose puck and fired a shot from the right slot that tucked in under the crossbar.
- The Panthers won a faceoff with 1:21 remaining after pulling their goalie in favor of the extra skater. Sabrina Kim's pass through multiple players bounced to the left post where Letterie was stationed and muscled the puck past Busky to tie the contest at 3-3 and send it to overtime.
- Skating three-on-three in the extra period, Colby had a great chance to win the contest with 15 seconds remaining, but Will saved Bri Michaud-Nolan's shot with her stick.
- In the final seconds, the Panthers won the faceoff in their defensive zone, and McInerny skated up the right side. She drove toward the goal, as Busky made a sprawling save with her right pad. The rebound came to the top of the crease where McInerny calmly tapped in the puck with 1.3 seconds left for the thrilling win.
NOTES
- The goal was McInerny's fourth goal of the season and her second game-winner.
- Vira had a goal and an assist in the win, as she accounted for three points (2G, 1A) during the weekend sweep.
- Kim assisted on a pair of Panther goals, giving the defender five helpers over the last three games.
- Middlebury improves to 51-12-0 in the all-time series with Colby.
