Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Late Surge Not Enough As Cardinals Outlast Panthers

The Middlebury men's ice hockey team scored twice in the third period, but Plattsburgh State held off a late Panther surge for the 3-2 victory in Chip Kenyon '85 Arena.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Plattsburgh struck first just 6:55 into the opening period. Matt Araujo fired a shot from the left circle that was saved by Middlebury goalie Adam Wisco. The rebound fell kindly for Luk Jirousek, who flipped it past Wisco and into the goal.
  • The Panthers nearly scored at the 8:39 mark as Zach Whitehead drove a shot from the point that rattled the crossbar.
  • Middlebury was given a five-on-three opportunity with 2:46 remaining in the first stanza, but goaltender Jacob Hearne thwarted multiple attempts to ensure the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
  • The Cardinals doubled their advantage after only 1:02 in the second period. Carson Gallagher gathered the loose puck between the circles and slotted it into the bottom-right corner to increase the lead to 2-0.
  • With 10:08 elapsed in the middle stanza, the Panthers nearly cut the deficit in half. Bret Pastor skated into the offensive zone and played a pass to an onrushing Ben Boren, whose redirection whistled just wide of the right post.
  • Plattsburgh nearly scored a third goal with 15:17 gone in the second period. Brannon Butler fired a long-range effort on goal. The rebound dropped to Ryan Butler on the doorstep who looked to have an open net, but a sprawling save from Wisco denied the bid.
  • The Cardinals increased their lead to 3-0 on the power play at the 6:43 mark of the third period. Araujo fired a one-timer from just inside the blueline that squeezed past Wisco and into the right corner of the net.
  • Middlebury responded with 8:58 elapsed. Nolan Moore found Andrej Hromic streaking down the left side of the offensive zone. Hromic drove toward the goal and snuck the puck underneath Hearne to make the score 3-1.
  • With 5:44 remaining in the game, the Panthers took advantage of the extra skater and closed the gap to just one (3-2). Billy Dobensky received a pass in the right circle and wristed an effort that beat the goaltender and nestled in the bottom-left corner.
  • Middlebury controlled the game for the final five minutes of action, continuously peppering the Plattsburgh net, but Hearne was equal to the task, making five saves over the last two minutes of play to hang on to the 3-2 win.
NOTES
  • Dobensky's tally was his first of the season.
  • Wisco snared a season-high 35 saves.
