#8 Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Mount Saint Mary In Season Opener

The eighth-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team opened the season with a 1-0 shutout over visiting Mount Saint Mary. Tyler Payne tallied the Panther's lone goal of the game.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Gavin Randolph recorded the first shot of the game with just 3:29 elapsed. He rifled a shot from 10 yards out, but Knights' goaltender Caesar Martinez dove to his right to deny the chance.
  • The Panthers made it 1-0 with 15:11 expired when Payne blasted a shot from just inside the top left of the 18, tucking the ball into the right panel of the goal.
  • Middlebury threatened to score again twice during the 41st minute. Jordan Saint-Louis received a pass with his back to the goal, turned around and shot just inside the 18, but was denied by a diving Martinez. Saint-Louis took the ensuing corner kick, but Luke Madden's header attempt off the corner sailed just high.
  • The Panthers best chance to double the lead came during the 56th minute on a similar set piece. Casey Lund used his head to redirect a corner from Saint-Louis, but Martinez denied the close-range chance. The ball ricocheted back into play, but Martinez was there again to thwart Alem Hadzic's one-timer.
  • Mount Saint Mary had a quality chance to knot the contest at the 75:47 mark. Quinn Tynan rifled a shot from 25 yards out, but Middlebury goalie Ryan Grady jumped up and corralled the ball with his hand to preserve the 1-0 victory.
NOTES
  • Grady's shutout was the 22nd in his career, tying him for fourth all-time in the Panther record books.
  • Middlebury has not lost a season-opening game in eight years.
  • The contest was the first held on the newly resurfaced South Street Field.
  • The Knights fall to 0-3 on the season.
