Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Ninth-Ranked Middlebury Edged By Hamilton

The #9 Middlebury men's soccer team grabbed an early lead in the 18th minute, but Hamilton tallied a pair of second-half goals to earn a 2-1 decision on South Street Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Panthers nearly got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute, but a header by Jordan Saint-Louis on the near post went just wide to the left.
  • Middlebury maintained the pressure in its offensive end, breaking through with 17:22 elapsed on a corner kick. Eujin Chae served the ball toward the far post, finding the head of Casey Lund who tucked the ball inside the post for the 1-0 edge.
  • Hamilton nearly tied the contest in the 37th minute, but a shot off the head of Thomas Kantrowitz on the left side was saved by Panther goalie Ryan Grady diving to his right.
  • Middlebury looked to double its lead just over eight minutes into the second stanza, but a left-footed shot on the run by Tyler Payne was saved by Continental goalie Ben Ziegler.
  • Hamilton tied the contest on a free kick just outside the box. Luke Ehrenfreund bent his attempt just inside the right post with 28:09 left in the contest.
  • The Panthers had four-straight corner kicks near the midway point of the stanza, but the Continental defense denied each opportunity.
  • Hamilton took a 2-1 lead with 14:15 left when Justin D'Alessandro sent a drop pass from the right side to Pandelis Margaronis just outside the box. Margaronis lifted a curling right-footed shot that knuckled just over the outstretched hands of Grady and into the top-right corner under the crossbar.
  • Middlebury increased its offensive energy in the waning minutes, with its best chance to tie the game coming in the final seconds. A cross from the left found the head of Luke Madden, but his attempt sailed just over the crossbar as the final horn sounded for the final 2-1 score.

NOTES

  • Lund's goal is the first of his career, doubling his point total for the week (1G, 2A).
  • Chae's assist was his first of the season.
  • Four of the last five matches between the two teams have been one-goal decisions, with three of them going in favor of the Panthers.
