#9 Middlebury Cruises Past Norwich

Casey Lund picked up two assists in the victory.
Box Score

The ninth-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team tallied a pair of second-half goals, pulling away for a 3-1 victory over Norwich. The match was originally scheduled to be played in Middlebury on Tuesday afternoon, but it was postponed due to weather.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Much of the play in the opening minutes took place in the midfield after a pair of Panther shots early in the contest.
  • Luke Madden tallied his first goal as a Panther with 8:30 left before halftime to put Middlebury on the scoreboard.
  • A throw-in from the left side by Casey Lund bounced once inside the box before Madden and Cadet goalie Robert Wagenseller leapt to challenge for the ball. Madden's head reached the ball first, lofting it just over Wagenseller's hands into the top of the net for a 1-0 edge.
  • Norwich tied the match at 1-1 in the 50th minute. Mamadi Jiana's initial shot was saved by Panther goalie Ryan Grady who came charging off his goal line, but Jiana snuck the ball into the net to tie the game.
  • The Panthers looked to regain the lead in the 54th minute after a corner kick, but a left-footed shot by Middlebury's Liam Sloan was stopped by a diving Wagenseller.
  • Middlebury took the lead for good at 55:24 when a crossing ball from the left by Lund was flicked by Alem Hadzic just over the outstretched arm of a leaping Wagenseller.
  • The Cadets put together a strong surge late in the 60th minute, as Jiana's bid from the right side was swatted away on a diving save by Grady on the near post. Norwich thought it had leveled the match seconds after the save, but the game-tying goal was disallowed because the Cadets were called for offsides.
  • After a Cadet turnover five minutes later, Jordan Saint-Louis gave Middlebury a 3-1 lead, working his way toward the middle of the pitch and dribbling past a diving Wagenseller before tucking the ball into the lower-left corner at the 65:40 mark.
  • The Cadets looked to cut into the advantage in the 79th minute, but Joseph Thongsythavong's bid from the left went just wide for the final 3-1 score.

NOTES

  • Hadzic's goal was the first in his career as a Panther.
  • Middlebury improves to 55-3-4 in the all-time series against Norwich.
