#2 Seed Women’s Tennis Cruises Past Colby In NESCAC Quarterfinals

The second-seeded and fifth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team (14-4) cruised past #7 seed and 22nd-ranked Colby (9-9) by a 5-0 score during NESCAC Quarterfinal action Friday at Wesleyan. All matches contested during the postseason are played until one team secures the decisive fifth point. The Panthers will continue postseason play when they take on third-seeded Tufts in semifinal action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The other semifinal features top-seeded Wesleyan and fourth-seeded Amherst.

Middlebury's duo of Sahana Raman and Claudia Miller split the first two games with their opponents in the #3 slot, before the Panther pair rattled off seven-straight games for an 8-1 victory. The top Middlebury tandem of Amy Delman and Gena Huang trailed 2-0, roaring back to win five of the next six games en route to an 8-4 triumph. Sami Remis and Brinlea La Barge raced out to a 4-1 edge at #2, before their opponents battled back and grabbed a 5-4 advantage. The Panthers won the 10th game, before the two sides exchanged the ensuing four and sent the match into a tiebreaker. Tied at two points apiece, the pairs traded three-point spurts before the Middlebury team pair won the last two points for a 8-7 (5) triumph and propelled the Panthers to a 3-0 lead going to singles.

Middlebury claimed the opening set at each of the six spots to start singles play. Huang increased the lead to 4-0 without surrendering a game at #5 (6-0, 6-0). Delman clinched the match with her eighth-consecutive win as an individual, cruising 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth slot for the final 5-0 tally.
