Morris Advances To Quarters In Singles, Morris & Vilys Bow Out In Doubles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Middlebury's Stan Morris won twice in the singles bracket of the NCAA Championships on Friday to advance to the quarterfinal round. Morris and David Vilys also competed in the doubles bracket, dropping a narrow decision to bow out of the tournament. Matches are being held at United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

Morris, the #2 seed in the singles bracket, started his day cruising past Nyathi Motlojoa from Luther in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). Later in the afternoon, the Panther claimed the first set against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Aidan Drover-Mattinen by a 6-2 tally. Drover-Mattinen evened the match with a 6-3 victory in the second set. Morris picked up the three-set triumph, winning the final two games, for a 7-5 win and a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals. He will take on sixth-seeded Jhonny Acosta from North Carolina Wesleyan at 10:00 a.m.

In a bracket of 16 tandems, the third-seeded pair of Morris and Vilys fell in a tightly-contested matchup with the Trinity (Texas) duo of Hao Nguyen and Christian Settles. The Tiger team won the opening set 6-4, before claiming the victory in a tiebreaker (7-6 (1)). Morris and Vilys had a stellar season for the Panthers, finishing with a 19-5 record atop the doubles lineup. The pair also earned All-NESCAC First-Team accolades and ended the season as the ITA Northeast Region's top-ranked tandem and won 15 of their last 18 matches.
