The fifth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team beat host and 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon 5-2 on Saturday to advance to next week's NCAA Quarterfinals at the USTA National Center in Orlando, Florida. This marks the ninth time in program history the Panthers (17-5) have reached the quarterfinals with the other appearances coming in 2005, 2007, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
The Tartans finish their season at 16-7.
During tournament play, all matches are contested until one team records the fifth point to secure the victory.
Doubles play finished in numerical order, with the hosts securing the match's initial point with an 8-3 triumph at the top position. Middlebury knotted the score at 1-1 when
Brinlea La Barge and
Sami Remis posted an 8-5 victory at #2, while
Sahana Raman and
Claudia Miller came from behind to outlast their counterparts in the third spot 8-7 (7-4) for a 2-1 lead. The win by Raman and Miller was their 12th-straight.
Carnegie Mellon tied the match at 2-2 with a win at #1 singles, but the Panthers claimed the next three points to secure the victory. Miller cruised 6-1, 6-1 in the third spot to give Middlebury a 3-2 edge before
Amanda Frank posted a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at #6.
Amy Delman clinched the win with a 7-5, 6-2 decision in the fourth slot.
