The fourth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team (19-2) eased past Stevens Institute of Technology (14-5) in NCAA Regional Semifinal action on Friday on the Proctor Tennis Courts. The Panthers advances to Saturday's regional final, taking on the winner of the other second-round matchup between #22 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals on the line.
Middlebury took care of business early, sweeping doubles competition. Knotted 1-1, the top tandem of
Stan Morris and
David Vilys won four-straight games to take a 5-1 lead and never looked back. The pair won 8-4, recording their fourth-consecutive victory of the spring. At #3,
Neel Epstein and
Zachary Hilty only dropped three games en route to an 8-3 win. Panther duo
Aidan Harris and
Noah Laber finished just seconds after Epstein and Hilty in the second slot, making it 3-0. The pair was knotted 4-4, but rallied for the 8-5 triumph. The Panther tandems in the second and third slots both recorded their 22nd win of the year, respectively.
Laber carried the momentum into singles action with a straight-set triumph at #2 (6-1, 6-4). Hilty earned his second victory of the day with a clean sweep (6-1, 6-1) in the fourth position to clinch the match for the hosts, 5-0. When the match ended, Morris was up one set (6-3) and tied 4-4 in the second, while Harris won his first set in tiebreaker fashion (7-6(0)).
