The Middlebury baseball team scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out a 7-5 victory over Union on Wednesday. The Panthers (9-7) are home again on Saturday for a doubleheader with Colby starting at 1:00 p.m., while the Dutchmen (7-10) head to Vassar on the same day for a pair of games.
Union broke through for a run in the top of the first on a base hit to left field by Jack DiNanno. Panther left fielder
Beau Root prevented a second run from scoring, cutting down Jono Santos at the plate when he attempted to score from second.
Middlebury answered in the latter half of the frame when
Andrew Ashley hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Root, making it a 1-1 contest.
The Dutchmen added three runs in the second when Thomas Parisi tripled to deep left-center field and scored on a hit through the ride side by Kobe Mentzer for a 4-1 edge.
The Panthers trimmed the difference to 4-2 in the home half of the third on an RBI fielder's choice by
Lucas Flemming, but the visitors got the run back in the fifth when Santos scored on a double play.
Middlebury used an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the margin to 5-3, setting up the late-inning rally.
The hosts tied the game in the home half of the eighth when
Mitchell Schroeder delivered a big two-run single through the left side to tie the game (5-5), advanced to second on the throw and ended the play on third after an error.
Jack Stolper pinch ran for Schroeder and scored two batters later on a single to right by Ashely for a 6-5 edge. The Panthers added an insurance run, as
Zip Malley drove home Ashley with a base hit for the 7-5 victory.
Alec Ritch pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season, while
George Goldstein (1-1) earned the win with 1.2 innings of work.

Chris Borter and
Sawyer Duarte led a balanced attack for Middlebury with two hits apiece.
Jack DiNanno went 3-4 with an RBI for the Dutchmen, while Mentzer added a pair of hits.
Kyle Patlove (0-1) took the loss, throwing 1.1 innings of relief.
