Middlebury Begins Play At NESCAC Championships

Sean McGarrity is seventh overall after shooting a 76 on Saturday.

The Middlebury men's golf team had a solid opening day at the 2022 NESCAC Championship on Saturday, claiming third place in the 10-team field competing at the Yahnundasis Golf Course in New Hartford, New York. The Panthers (309) are looming nine strokes back of first-place Hamilton (300) and one behind Tufts (308).

The second and final day of the tournament is Sunday, with action beginning at 10:00 a.m. Hamilton's Billy Geach shot an even 71 on his home course to lead the field.

The defending champion Panthers were led by Sean McGarrity, who shot a 76 (+5) and is in seventh place. McGarrity finished with 11 pars and a pair of birdies. His first birdie came on the second hole with a three on the 402-yard par four, while starting the back nine with a four on the 546-yard par-five 10th hole. Kenneth Dieker tied for eighth and finished the day with a 77 (+5). He had a strong opening nine holes with eight pars and completed the round with 12.

Phin Choukas and Colin McCaigue each carded a 78 (+7) and are tied for 14th. Choukas finished with three birdies on the day, finishing under par on #4, #10 and #18, while McCaigue finished out the front nine with back-to-back birds on eight and nine.

Hogan Beazley is in 19th place, as all five scoring Middlebury golfers rank in the top 20 in the field of 48. Beazley finished his round with a 79 (+8) and had a birdie on the par-five 10th hole.
